Unable to open task mgr regedit msconfig

I was sent a IM that infected my computer. I ran Norton Anti virus in safe
mode and it did not detect any viruses. I uninstalled AIM, but when I try to
open task manager or run msconfig and regedit, it pops up then closes
immediately. How do I fix this?

Those are symptoms of a virus/worm/or Trojan.
You'll need something other than Norton to detect and remove them.

Thats because norton has been infected as well. Download another one or
2 free anti-virus programs and install and run in safe mode.

try running the system file checker utility; just click your start and then the run buttons, and type in this; sfc /scannow (which includes that space after sfc) this will check critical windows system files and replace any as needed. It may ask for your XP CD disk to put in also.

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the Spybot
mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose definitions
aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free on-line
scanners to double-check your system.
