Rebuilding Vista Mail

In trying to restore old messages and newsgroups to a re-install of Windows
Vista Mail, we have definitely done something to fowl up the application.
We are having a lot of wierd problems, including connection issues to the
newsgroups.

As a result, how do we completely rebuild a new installation of Windows
Vista Mail? Is there a way to delete the current install and then
re-install a fresh copy of the application?

Find the message store (Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store
folder) and then you can move everything under that directory to a new
location so that the directory is blank and nothing is there under it. Then
start WinMail and it will re-establish a new message store. Then you can
add your accounts and such. Once you do that back things up, so if it
screws up again, you can restore it (see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx). Then
you can try File | Import | Messages and point to the directory to which you
moved the old message store. If that doesn't work, then you can drag the
individual eml files from the old directories and drop them on top of
WinMail folders to incorporate those messages into the WinMail message
store.

I don't think dragging and dropping the newsgroup messages will work, but
you can try it.

Hello Steve,

Thanks for the instructions, they were very helpful. I will try to recover
using your suggested method. Others have suggested the drag-and-drop
method, but I would prefer to use the integrated export/import features if
they work reliably. However, without an exported backup, we may be forced
to try the drag-and-drop method.

Thanks,
Richard

Who provides your email service? Or to ask that question another way,
what is the part of your email address after the @ symbol?
Your mail provider will typically have a web page that shows how to
set up an email program. If you need more help, tell us the name of
your email service provider.
