Properties lost by Photo Editor

I'm using XP to handle my photos. I'm resisting buying specialized software
for the task (but I may have to break down and buy something).

My pictures are taken with a fujifilm s5000
I'm using Windows explorer film strip/slide show, etc functionality.

The advanced properties include lots of cool stuff like fstop, shutterspeed,
etc, and date picture taken.

However, if I edit the photo (crop, auto balance) with Microsoft Photo
Editor (3.0.2.3), the resulting jpeg no longer has advanced properties. ie.
The date taken is now blank, and the date modified become, well, the date
modified.

Is there any way to have Photo Editor not lose the original settings?

Thanks John,

I downloaded Exifer for Windows. I was able to restore my exif info on the
modified files.
This looks like a pretty nice piece of software.
However, I'm somewhat concerned that it is described as beta, and the site
indicates that the software has not been updated or modified since Sept 2002.

It looks like the author may have lost interest in his project. (Just
guessing here; obviously I could be wrong.)

Sorry, I have no further info on the software...
all I can say is it works for me.

However...looking at the version history...
v1.0.20 (Build 104) was the last beta that I
see. There are several other versions not
listed as beta before the v1.1.5 (Build 263)
that is currently available.

If you have doubts about the software I
would suggest that you uninstall it.

Oops, yes, I initially read the updates list from top to bottom, and it was
on the bottom entry that I saw the word beta. When I realized the list was
in reverse chron order, and went to the top to get the last build date, I
hadn't noticed it ceased to be beta.

On an unrelated note, one of the things I wanted to do was redate a batch of
pictures. I went to England and forgot to reset the camera's clock, so all
the times are off by 5 hours. The EXIF Edit date facility looks like it
should do it, but I tried a lot of combinations of the options and wasn't
able to accomplish this time-shift in batch.
I can change the dates one file at a time.
But selecting multiple images doesn't seem to work.
There is a tick-box called "relative time for multiple files", but this
didn't have the affect I expected. (All of the files after the first one
were set 5 hours apart.)

Have you done this? Help.

Maybe the following steps will be useful.

Open Exifer and choose the folder...

With the selected folder open go to...Edit / Select All.
(Or..type...Ctrl / A)

Now...right click the selected group and choose...
EXIF-IPTC / Edit / EXIF data tab / Date tab...

Check the Date box and enter the correct date.
OK / Yes / No...

Not wanting to appear really thick here, and, by the way thanks for all your
prompt help, but ...

I want to add 5 hours to all of the times in the date taken.
(ie. 5:02 a.m. becomes 10:02 a.m., 1:12 p.m. becomes 6:12 p.m. etc.)
The date is actually right (so long as I wasn't taking the picture between
7:00 p.m. and midnight EDT, which, since that is midnight to 5:00 a.m. GDT,
is unlikely).

I was in exactly the spot you described
EXIF-IPTC / Edit / EXIF data tab / Date tab...
but I checked Time, and selected 5:00 am in the time adjustment box
But what this does is it changes only the last file selected by 5 hours, not
all of the files.
If I check the multiple files relative box, then it does something even
weirder.
In my example above 5:02 a.m. in the first file doesn't change; the 1:12
p.m. in the second file becomes 10:02 a.m. !

OK, I've got it now.

To change the time on a batch of pictures relative to the original time
taken (in this case by 5 hours because of the 5 time-zone travel), do the
following:
- Select the batch of pictures then
- go to EXIF/ITPC : Edit : EXIF Data : Date
- DO NOT tick either the Date or the Time boxes in the Date Taken section
- DO NOT tick Incremental (for more then one selected images)
- set the hours minutes, seconds box in Date/Time offset to 5:00AM
- Click OK.

If you tick any of the Date, Time or Incremental boxes, you will not get the
result you want (a relative time shift). These boxes serve other purposes,
and I have now used them for those purposes. But for a time zone shift of a
batch of pictures, these must be off.

One final note. On the EXIFER websit, the picture of the Hours, munites and
seconds box looks like this: 00:00:00
But on the current install of the software 2.1.5 Build 263 it looks like
this: 12:00AM

I played around with Exifer for a little while the other day and noticed it
changes the h/v resolution from 230 to 96 dpi when I rotate a photo.
