Microsoft Photo Editor

I'm running on XP Home. Prior to running the SP2 update, I
could click on a jpeg photo and the application (MS Photo
editor) would allow me to tab through all the photos
contained in a folder or on a disk without having to open
the photos one at a time.

After running the SP2 update, MS Photo Editor will open a
single photo, but gives me no option to tab through all of
the photos in a folder.

How do I regain the better functionality of the pre-SP2
update version of MS Photo Editor (or what ever the
application was called).

I don't like all the third party applications like Adobe
Photo Elements because they focus on creating photo albums
and organizing my photos into their structures. I like it
clean & simple. I can organize my photos in folders all by
myself, I just want to be able to view all of the folders
in a folder, one at a time without having to open each
photo, one at a time.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

To Associate your files with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer open Windows
Explorer Go to Tools | Folder options | File Types Tab | Select the image
extension that you wish to change the assocation then click change choose
program and check the box "Always use the select program to open this kind
of file" or Right Click an image file | Opens With | Choose Program and
check the box "Always use....."

Thanks Paul, your solution returned my PC to it's pre-SP2
setup and I'm delighted.

I had the same problem after SP2. Here's the solution.
Right click on a jpg and choose "OPEN WITH" option. Then
click on "CHOOSE PROGRAM" and select WINDOWS PICTURE AND
FAX VIEWER for opening jpg files. At the bottom of that
window, check the box that says "Always use the selected
program to open this kind of file" and then click "OK."

That enables me to open all jpg files with WINDOWS PICTURE
AND FAX VIEWER

Hi
I have the same problem. In addition, I can do the
undermentioned activity ONLY as an Administrator. As a
general user, Microsoft Photo Editor giver
a 'Registration error'.
Any help regarding this would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks Paul. Your suggestion is helpful in making the
Windows Picture and Fax viewer work but the problem (not
pertinent at the moment) with MS Photo Editor still
remains.

To change the editor try the following

Go to Start | Run | Type regedit

In the Registry Editor find this key

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

Click on this value
"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"
Replace the value with the directory of your program such as the following
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Photoshop.exe" "%1"

When you click the edit button your images should open in the program you
have chosen.

I have the same problem with the default photo editor
being mspaint. I would like to change it to Microsoft
Photo Editor or Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

How to open your choice of image editors when
clicking the Edit button on the Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer screen.

IMPORTANT: This message contains information
about modifying the registry. Before you modify the
registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that
you understand how to restore the registry if a problem
occurs. For information about how to back up, restore,
and edit the registry, click the following link to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Information About Editing the Registry

===========================================

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without
the quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

In the Data column you should see:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will
see your current default)

Replace the key with the path to the program that will
be your default image editor. I wanted Picture It! 7 so
the following is what I changed to.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 7\pip.exe" "%1"

Now, my images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if I left click the Edit button...Picture It! 7 opens.

To replace the string...

Left click "default" to select it.

Go to...Edit / Modify...

In the "Edit String" field...

Copy/Paste the path to your program choice:

"C:\Program Files\??????????\???.exe" "%1"

Left click...OK.

Now, your images still open in the Picture and Fax
Viewer but if you left click the Edit button...your image
editing program opens..

Good luck.
