Problem getting USB 2.0 to work

I have a Dell Dimension 4500 (Pentium 4, 2.4GHz, 512Meg RAM, XP
Professional).
The owners manual says there are six USB 2.0 compliant ports. I have an
Epson 2200
photo printer which is plugged into one of the ports on the rear. When I
turn on the
printer I get an error message on the Windows XP tray saying a high speed
device is
connected to a USB 1.1 port. I've gone into My Computer>Properties>Hardware
and
under USB ports there is no mention of USB 2.0

Is there a software driver which needs to be installed, or what am I doing
wrong?

I think I've figured it out. I went into the "Hardware" section and found a
listing for
USB controller which had a yellow "question mark" beside it. I went through
the
hardware installation wizard, used the driver CD and it's now recognizing
USB 2.0.

Thanks for the help...........

Hi There
I have a Dell Optipex that has four USB Ports and none of them seem to be a
high speed USB port 2.0. I cannot believe that I have four ports that will
not accept my Philips USB 2.0 A/V Adapter. Can I change these ports to be
faster?, were they originally faster and something has gone astray. If I go
into the properties of these USB ports they come up with Intel (R)
8280/BA/USB Host 2442 and 2443. If I cannot alter what I already have what
is my best option. I have a Wanadoo Wireless Adapter that works but if I
take it out and put it back it I get the same message but it works. If I
plug my Philips USB Adapter in it doesn't work and it also stops my wireless
mouse from working right.
Please advise but try to keep info clear as I am a comparative beginner
particulary with computer jargon and computer hardware. I read somewhere
that an external hub is probably my best option but advise on which one would
be appreciated.

Normally, It is best to start your own post. That way no one is confused as
what help is directed toward them.

I have no idea how old a Dell Optipex is and whether it ever had USB 2.0
ability.
I don't see usb 2.0 or enhanced in your controller description.
Intel (R) 8280/BA/USB Host 2442 and 2443.

If you give exact model I could try and look on Dell website. for fun you
could install Dell driver cd and try a driver update four usb controller
using Device Manager. Also, look for anything with red or yellow mark.

As far as the Philip's A/V adapter. Does it have it's own power supply?
maybe it is drawing to much power from the usb controller.
Try one of the other usb ports or possibly a usb Hub.
use keybrd or mouse in back usb port. for testing plug Philips into front
usb port, if that is where other two are located.

In device manager under the Universal Serial Bus controllers section if
one of them does not say Enhanced Host controller, then you don't have
USB2. To get his capability purchase a USB2 add in card from your local
computer store.
