Pricelessware CDs Distribution

J

Justin_Bailey

Hello group,

I have been a long time pricelessware fan, I just recently had the idea
to make available the pricelessware CDs (2004-2006) on eBay (for .99
plus shipping) with worldwide shipping available.

I was wondering what the groups thoughts on this are, and if this is
even permitted. I read the FAQ page on pricelesswarehome.org, but was
unable to determine if this is allowed.

Also if anyone would like to request a CD from me, I would be happy to
oblige.

I can be contacted either by replying to this post or by email:
rude_skankinNOSPAM(at)NOSPAMyahoo(dot)NOSPAMcom with a SUBJECT line
of "PRICELESSWARE CD"

Just remove NOSPAMs and replace (at) and (dot) with appropriate syntax

I think this would be a great way to spread the word about these great
freeware programs, and Pricelessware in general.

Let me know what you think.

Sincerely,

Justin Bailey

Let me know what you think.

You can give them away but YOU MAY NOT SELL alt.comp.freeware's
Pricelessware CDs. That information is in the readme file on the CD.
It's also available on-line:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/2006PL-CD-readme.txt

<q>
Redistribution of the CD:

Pricelessware programs are included if the author freely allows
redistribution and/or gave permission to the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup
to include the program on this CD.

You may make copies of this CD and distribute them to others. Recipients
may be asked to furnish a blank CD. They may not be asked to pay a fee
of any kind.

Interesting policy, great for payware authors since it almost guarantees
limited distribution of freeware via CDs.

No one can stop you from doing whatever you want. But rest assured, the
reception here to your idea will be cold.

The distribution of the Pricelessware CD's has always been voluntary and
freely offered, with no expectation of reward or even reimbursement.
(While the pages say something about the sender requesting that he be
reimbursed for supplies and postage, there is no workable way it can be
required or enforced.) I've sent out quite a few disks over the years;
about half the recipients sent reimbursement in cash or in kind. The
other half didn't bother. Those that did sent enough that they covered
for those that didn't. I broke even, and feel lucky for that. Finances
weren't an issue for me (if they were, I wouldn't have volunteered);
I've gained much, much more from my association with this newsgroup and
from the software I've learned about here than the minor expense
involved in participating in the CD distribution project. This is my way
of giving a little back -- "passing it forward", if you will.

Putting the Pricelessware CD's up on an overtly commercial site like
eBay -- even at an unprofitable price -- would still taint the project
with an air of commercialism. And frankly, it's gotten to the point
where physically distributing the CD is becoming unnecessary. This
year's torrent distribution drastically reduced the number of CD's
burned and mailed, as did the several conventional download sites made
available.

Bottom line: it's a bad idea. I'm sure your motives were pure, but it
just doesn't fit the spirit of the project. Freely offering to burn and
mail (as you have already done) is plenty.

JMO. Other'sMMV.

Then so be it. Those who matter, know; those who know, matter.

Freeware authors often feel their gifts to the world should not be sold
by others. ACF's "interesting policy" is an echo of prohibitions that
are found in many of the Pricelessware apps' EULAs.

Thanks for saying that Mark. You speak for me on that. Justin, to
point out what's been mentioned before, to sell the CD -at cost or even
below- will violate the End User License Agreements for a number of the
programs.

And that'll end the party 'round here pretty quickly. Good idea, wrong
product.

imo,

Thank you for all the responses. I won't be selling it, that's why I
asked before hand.

I have a habit of giving away free stuff in my eBay auctions anyway,
so....I guess I will do that instead. :)

Cheers,

Justin Bailey

Exactly, so it is.

Just throw a disk in with the stuff you sell, and don't say anything
about it. I suspect you'll get a good response from your buyers.
