So then, is someone going to compile archives of the updates periodically
and post that as a download package someplace so that we can keep our CD
pack up to date?

news:[email protected]...

T

Teranews

I can only distribute the Pricelessware CD as it is without updating any
applications

C

Ceg

If someone wants to compile the updates into some kind of ZIP, CAB, or RAR,
etc. type of single file, I'll post it on one of my servers for download.

There are *NO* official Pricelessware CD updates.
The next CD will be based on the vote conducted in this group.

Rage against the machine, if you will, but that's the way it's going to
be. :p

That would be great!

I don't recall it ever being announced that you had been elected or
appointed dictator. Right or wrong, cite the authority under which you
imagine you are empowered to issue such an absolute dictum.

Umm...ok. So, then...if someone wants to compile the updates into an
*UNOFFICIAL* archive I'll post it to one of my servers for download. No
decoder ring needed...no secret handshake.

BTW, is there some type of copyright on the Pricelessware CD or is that
open source or what? Exactly what does whatever license allow one to do or
not to do with the collection of programs on the CD? If I decide to post
the programs for download for those having such difficulty getting the ISO
and dealing with all the hoop jumping to get it from whatever the current
peer network is, I don't want to run into the same klusterfuk I ran into
when I attempted to list ToniArts programs for download and attempted to
give him use of some free, uncluttered, no-spam web space and got treated
like I was some kind of dumbass fukwit.

It comes from a higher authority. All of us. Because that's the way it is.

Thank you for asking. Permission is given to make copies of the CD. Full
stop. See:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/CD2004PL.htm

Each of the Pricelessware web pages has a copyright statement at the
bottom. FYI - copyright is *automatic* in the US - a copyright statement
is not *required* (I don't know the law in other countries).

This web page will tell you what ACF decided - by group consensus - to
do - that is also what the authors gave ACF *permission* to do:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/proposal-CD.htm

The email I sent to PW authors read as follows:

<quote>
One of your programs was chosen by participants in the
alt.comp.freeware newsgroup as a 2004 Pricelessware selection.

alt.comp.freeware participants are creating a Pricelessware 2004 CD. It
will be free. The details: goals, method of distribution etc. are here:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/proposal-CD.htm

Your Pricelessware program: ____________
is listed here: _____________

May we include your program on the CD?
</quote>

Licensing varies. Some authors do not normally permit redistribution.

Authors gave permission to the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup as a *whole*
ro do certain *specific* things.

Next year the group may want to do some things differently. This year is
a done deal. We should stay within the boundaries that were agreed upon
within the group - and agreed to by PW authors.

So what is the 50 cent answer? I can post the ISO? I can post the expanded
files of the CD? Basically, can I put a copy of the CD in an ftp space
where people can download one file or many files?

<SNIP>

Hi Danny,

Volunteers are always welcome but please *ask* the group's permission
before you do something like this. The Pricelessware CD belongs to the
*group* and the group consensus was that it would not be updated until
after the 2005 selection process.

There is an additional problem. You have listed versions and version
types that are not consistent with the versions chosen by the group.

The first example I see is the second program on your list - AiRoboForm
v5.6.6 - see:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004DESKTOP.htm#A125

AI RoboForm
(Freeware) (last available uncrippled version)
download v 4.6.8 (AiRoboForm-4-6-8.exe) (740 KB)

You have changed it to a crippled version.

I'm sure your intention was to be helpful but this sort of post can
cause a lot of unnecessary confusion. Please propose a course of action
to the group and get some feedback before you act.

You *can* - who's going to stop you? You would be acting as an
individual, without the blessing of ACF or the PW authors.

Distributing program files apart from the PW2004 CD was not part of this
year's proposal (the group consensus in ACF) or this year's agreement
between ACF and PW authors.

Something for your consideration. It looks like the PW2004 ISO needs a
new "official" home.

I don't really see a difference. Sure, the ISO is the one file y'all are
distributing. Why is there a problem if I were to use that ISO to create a
CD and post that CD for people to download by file and/or folders rather
than a 500+ meg file? Some people are on crappy little dial-up and can't
get a 500+ meg file, but could get the files by downloading a few files at a
time or a folder at a time.

My intention was to aid those who CANNOT download the 500+ meg file. I
don't plan on altering any of the files nor changing any files.

I've learnt to follow the rules
I can offer a CD with all the updates BUT I won't have the blessing of the
group
I can only distribute the CD as it is
HOWEVER on a private basis, I think you can distribute a CD with the updates
BUT again, who can you trust on the Internet

BTW, a local newspaper has promised to do a write up on the CD in Thailand
on Wednesday

Just wondering whether we can include the following to the Authors of
freeware

1) are we allowed to use updated versions without asking for permission, to
be included in future versions of the CD

Or they could just go to Pricelessware and get the programs one at a time.

You're absolutely correct! What was I thinking? Ok, nobody needs me to
post the files where they can download groups at a time...they can just go
to the website and henpeck them one at a time. 'Scuse me...I'll just go
back and sit in the corner with my thumb in my ass again.
