This error seems fairly common since XP SP2 and beyond. Here is an
interesting take on it. I have an older HP 6535 and a Deskjet 882C. This
combo of hardware worked FINE with Win98 for several years. Recently I
upgraded to XP. Lo and behold, with the same hardware I now get continual
messages stating that "Power Surge on Hub Port".
Well, the hardware has not changed and BTW the printer runs off its own
power supply so it is not drawing power from the USB connection.
What gives?
How to fix??
I run this machine primarily as a printer share and it does not print when
the message is active.

I have a similar problem. I have a dell dimension 3000. I've had it for 2
years and I have had my Konica minolta z10 digital camera the same amount of
time. I have always had xp sp2. I have connected my camera to pc using the
usb cable that came with the camera ever since i got them. It has always
worked. But recently the computer contacted microsoft for "critical updates"
and now everytime i try to connect my camera i get the power surge n hub port
warning. I tried the workaround of turning off the warning msgs but that
doesn't make the camera connect, all it does now is when i plug in the camera
nothing happens. I can't accept that it worked for 2 years and now i have to
plug the camera in to a/c to make it work. That doesn't make sense.I can't
uninstall sp2 because it is embedded in my windows disk that came w/the
computer and even though i removed all the windows updates, reinstalled
windows and tried agin it doesn't work. I called dell and they said it is
software problem not hardware so they can only help if i pay them $99 per
call. I don't see why i should pay for something to work that has always
worked in the past until recently.

I've had this problem for the past 5 days now. This is not a hardware
problem. With nothing plugged in to the USB ports the "power surge on hub
port" message still keeps popping up over and over. I have a Dell Dimension
E510. I tried the patch for the 4700 that's supposed to fix this but all it
did was suppress the message. When I tried to plug all USB devices in, the
USB drive would connect/disconnect over and over again. I've tried old
restore points but this hasn't helped. I believe the problems began after an
automatic Windows update was installed. I don't know what the update was for.
The port that gets this message doesn't seem to physically exist either. I
have 8 USB ports and all of these work okay and still work if I disable the
8-port hub that the message is complaining about.
Someone posted that this is caused by a virus in the CMOS ram. Can that be?
Something else that happened recently was that I plugged in a very bad RAM
stick into one of the USB port. The ram drive just kept wanting to be
reformatted. Could the RAM stick have had a virus that was passed in via
USB. Now this is really getting wild.
I'm still experimenting. Any advice is appreciated.

i have been using microsoft windows XP as an operating system for my pc.
recently i have come across a problem with the USB hub, which probably might
have ocurred to my understanding out of usage of a faulty jetflash drive.
since the day of its usage the highspeed USB has discontinued its function,
whereas the earlier slowspeed version still functions e.g.i can operate my
printer through USB port. while the flash disk drives of any make discards
to operate. the warning that the system flashes mentions " power surge on USB
port".
i have been unable to figure out the correct method to deal with the
situation even when i consulted a professional.
kindly help me with the critical situation and guide me through a possible
cure.
thank you.

*note: both the USb ports on the CPU do not operate on high speeds.
system: intel(R) pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz .
