Power surge on Hub Port

A

Andrew Wilson

Hello
Just clean installed a slipstream Windows XP Professional with SP3 on a
laptop.
It boots up fine but I get a message 'Power surge on Hub Port' on the
screen. There is nothing connected into any USB ports. If I click 'reset' or
'close' nothing happens and the message keeps appearing. I have inserting a
USB memory stick into one of the ports but it doesn't show up in My
Computer.
I have Googled but the replies are mostly concerned with USB hubs that are
connected to a USB port.
Could anyone assist please?
Thanks
Andrew Wilson

This might have nothing whatsoever to do with your recent
installation of Win XP Professional SP3. I suspect you have a
hardware problem with one of your USB ports.

You have told us that the laptop boots up OK. Device Manager
might provide a few clues, so try the following:

Click on Start, followed by Run
Type devmgmt.msc
Click on OK

Scroll down the list of devices, and pay particular attention to
the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, Hubs and Ports. Do any of
the icons have a '?' or 'X' symbol ?

You could try disabling or removing any suspect USB devices (via
Device Manager) and re-booting your computer. Plug and Play
should find and reinstall the devices you have removed. If the
problem persists, you might need to identify and replace a faulty
hardware component (easier said than done with a laptop).
