This usually means that you are not set up properly to find the outgoing
email server. Ask your email provider (who is probably also your
internet provider) for their instructions for setting up to use their email
servers. If they haven't written instructions for Windows Mail yet, use
their instructions for Outlook Express but under Windows Mail instead.
The instructions are probably somewhere on their web site. Or, you
could tell us who your email provider is and see if anyone here already
knows where to find the instructions.

You may have to delete some or all of the messages now in the Outbox
after the setup.

If you want to be treated as shouting, and therefore receive fewer answers,
post in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.

The download we mention most often here has to be installed after you
download to have any effect. It also comes in a 32-bit version and a 64-bit
version, and some users guess wrong on which one matches their version
of Vista.

Does anyone know how to set this up to use with a yahoo mail account?

Thanks,
[snip]
Which part of Yahoo? If it's the yahoo.com part, you have to either
pay extra or install a proxy program to connect using Windows Mail.

Some of the Yahoo instructions were written for Outlook Express, but
should also work under Windows Mail.

Yahoo also has servers for other countries or for specific internet
providers; these servers have different requirements.

I am still getting the same message after I downloaded the fix and deleted
the messages in my outbox. I double checked my settings and they appear to
be correct. I was able to send out mail before & don't know what happened.
Any suggestions?

Hey Gary, Okay so I downloaded the correct "fix" but it still says that I
don't have a valid account specified. Can you help me? Or else is there
another system I can use that will allow me to email from sites such as
craig's list?

That response of mine was written for "dk"'s specific problem, so
it probably does not apply to you, Monica.
Let's back up and consider what your real needs are.
If you formerly used webmail (via our browser) and you were happy
with that, there may be no need to set up a desktop email program
like Windows Mail. Who is your email service provider? Or to ask
that question another way, what is the part of your email address after
the @ symbol?

Exactly what says "you need windows mail to email from sites such
as Craig's list"? I have never seen that message.

It sounds like the fix did not 'take'. Try it again.

Also, open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. See if there is a "Hotmail"
listed. If yes, select it, then click on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Just how are you trying to send an email?

One possible reason that the fix for setting Hotmail as your default is
not working for you is because you have not upgraded to the newer
Windows Live Hotmail. Give that a try:
http://get.live.com/mail/overview

After installing that upgrade, you may have to re-apply the fix for
setting Hotmail as your default email service.

Let me know if that works.
If it doesn't work, there is one other solution.

Okay, so I tried to download the new windows hotmail, but I must already be
using it because when I click on the download button, my hotmail email just
pops up. As far as emailing, I will tell you what I am trying to do. I go on
the personals ads and click on someone's name to email them and then it won't
send.
