Playing AVI movies

Could somebody please give me 'chapter & verse' on playing AVI movies in
Powerpoint 2002

I understand that these cannot be played directly but require and external
player such as Windows Media Player

I have tried linking the AVI file as an object but only managed to get sound
and a message saying that a 'decompressor' was not available.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

AVI files in PP 2002, are routed thru the MCI player, not Windows Media
Player. The decompressed is a codec, or rather instructions on how the
video was compressed. This faq has a lot of information on where you can
get the missing codec and what they are.

If you will be burning the presentation for distribution, you may want to
save yourself a future headache and include the codec installer on the CD.
This way if the playback computer does not have it, you'll be able to
install it quickly.
