AVI movie shows as black square

I'm running Powerpoint 2007. When I go to "Insert --> Movie From File" and
insert by AVI movie, it just shows as a black square with no audio. The same
AVI file plays fine when I open it from the Windows Media Player program
itself, so I know the there is nothing wrong with the movie file. What can I
do?

Movie trouble-shooting can get ugly fast.

Let's start by asking you to move the movie to the root folder. PowerPoint
hic-ups badly when the path to the movie file is longer that about 128
characters. So move your movie to "C:/My Movie.avi" and try inserting it
again. If it plays, then we have your answer. If not, post back and we'll
get ugly.

Moving the AVI file to the C:\ directory and inserting it from there produced
the same results. Any other suggestions?
