Golly.

You stupid little ****.

I'm sure we all look on in awed expectancy as you propose to either
assist in the pricelessware process or, er, do whatever it is that you
are currently deciding to do.

Usually the latter, eh?

Did you notice how you snipped the bit where I asked how you might
contribute to the PL process?

Its never going to be me, is it?

Or you.

GAG is the name, the name comes from the Spanish generic "Gestor de
Arranque Gráfico"
which http://translation.lycos.com translates to "Manager of
Graphical Starting", or the author him self more correctly translates
to "Graphical Boot Manager". Thus GAG is *A* "Graphical Boot Manager".
If GAG is the title, "Graphical Boot Manager" is the subtitle so to
speak. In other words Susan, I am not asking to change your general
"name policy" or naming conventions or anything, only that you name
this one app by its proper name - GAG.

I understand the point you're making. I will do it your way if you
insist but first I'd like you to at least consider the points I raised
in my last post.

IMO you're looking at *one* tree and ignoring the forest. Names are
*often* a problem. I'm tempted to say always but there must be a *few*
exceptions. ;)

It's fairly common to see "initials" FIRST. For example:

http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/

ERUNT
The Emergency Recovery Utility NT

NTREGOPT
NT Registry Optimizer

How do I find out the "real" NAMES of those apps?

I decided a better question was: Why do I need to know?

KISS -> if an app has a "collection" of words (The Emergency Recovery
Utility NT) and a "collection" of letters (ERUNT) show the words first.
I don't need to know *which* "collection" is the NAME - it's not relevant.

That seems like a reasonable approach to me. . . *One* less thing to
worry about. . .

Names are lots of fun. not. . .

Finding the "real" NAME is often a challenge. Please go (as I just did)
to: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

You'll see:

Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) (in large letters at the top of
the page)
PE-Builder (in a large graphic)
Bart's PE Builder (at the beginning of the text)
PE Builder (in the text)

I thought "Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE)" was the name. But
now I've seen:

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/pebuilder.txt

Apparently "PE Builder" is the "real" name.

I just changed *that* name. . .

Then there's this question: Is the company name part of the app name?
Some times the answer is clear, more often it's not. Then it's a "best
guess" based on what's shown on the web page. FWIW - When I put the
company name in front of Pimmy I was told that was wrong. When I left it
off the Serif apps I was told that was wrong.

I could go on. . . and on. . . and on. . .

IMO the bottom line is: include the name, the initials/acronym, former
name(s) and *don't* make mountains out of molehills.

No I am not ignoring anything, in fact I am well aware of the "forest"
and the many "trees". I am also aware of the fact it is easy to get
"trapped" in the forest, overwhelmed by the many trees, and from that
jump into a defensive position when arguments about a single "tree"
are presented. I understand your need to "fend off" some workload, but
still, I suggest if someone can present some reasonable arguments and
references as to why a name in use on the PL is not the proper name
(as I think I just did), then at least listen. If in doubt, you could
turn to the group for input (leave it up to the group, do nothing if
no input), or you could e-mail the author him selves. AFAIK no one
have objected to my post so far. So unless the author tells you
otherwise, or anyone present relevant arguments, citations or
references to indicate the proper name is in fact not GAG but
Graphical Boot Manager or whatever, then AFAIK the proper name to use
on the PL *is* GAG. Now Giggle.

All the best,

Okay. :) :) :)

Nice to know someone is even *more* pig-headed than I am. . . ;)

Go to:

http://gag.sourceforge.net/pics.html

The name shown in the screen shot is:

GAG The Graphical Boot Manager

Looks like "THE NAME" to me. Shall I go with it?

If you don't like that here's another alternative to consider:

http://sourceforge.net/users/rastersoft/

<q> GAG, the Graphical Boot Manager (gag) </q>

Now giggle.

After adding GAG I suggest changing the description for XOSL
<http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/PL2005SYSTEMUTILITIES.php#0870-PW>
to:

Description: Extended Operating System Loader (XOSL) is a
full-featured free boot manager with a easy-to-use and full-blown
graphical user interface. Requires a VESA VBE 1.2 compliant display
controller (which most of todays computers will have). XOSL is
distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).
Development discontinued in 2001, but XOSL is still among the best
free bootmanagers - in use by many. For a full feature list, see docs
included in the distribution, or follow links from linked page below.

GAG The Graphical Boot Manager
(Freeware) (open source: GNU GPL)
Windows OS: OS Independent
Languages: English, Castellano, Galego, German, French
Description: GAG (initials, in spanish, of Graphical Boot Manager) is a
Boot Manager program. It's loaded when the computer is turned on and
allows you to choose the operating system you want to use. Its main
features are: Allows boot of up to 9 different operating systems. It can
boot operating systems installed in primary and extended partitions on
any available hard disk. Can be installed from nearly all operating
systems. GAG doesn't need its own partition. It installs itself in the
first track of the hard disk, wich is reserved for these kinds of
programs. It can also be instaled on a floppy disk, without using the
hard disk. It has a timer to boot a default operating system (selectable
by the user). The configuration menu can be protected with a password.
The program works in graphic mode (needs a VGA or better graphic card),
and has a lot of icons. Hides the primary partitions which allows the
user to have instaled more than one DOS and/or Windows in the same hard
disk. Allows a password to be put on each operating system, denying
access to non-authorized people. Allows the boot manager text to be
translated to all languages. Can exchange disk drives, allowing to boot
from the second, third... hard disk operating systems such as MS-DOS.
Has the SafeBoot system, that allows to boot your hard disk even if GAG
is accidentally overwritten. Supports a great variety of keyboards
(QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ and DVORAK keyboards). Fully support for hard
disks up to 4 terabytes (4096 gigabytes).

What - HEY!

Here I spent all kinds of serious energy calculating strategy,
conducted an emergency conference call with top generals, worked
out complete preparations to rush in...and save the honor of GAG.
The troops at last assembled, ready to advance onto the field --
and what?

Deserted, ABANDONED?!

It is a wicked trick of fate has conspired here, a harsh shifting
of tectonic plates, that leaves warriors stumbling like this, onto
an empty battlefield, finding nothing remaining but distant giggles,
and the strange sound of "HiDeHiDeHo," wafting off into the clouds.

After phoning the catering services in your area, I then made the decision
to be a good, frugal consumer. I picked up some pizza locally, put a bottle
of wine in the box, secured that with masking tape. Then I sent it out for
shipment UPS ground. They said the package should arrive on your doorstop
in 5-7 business days. (Btw, pizza has salt and that's a preservative, so
don't worry if it looks funny.)

The bribe should result in my amassing a large credit balance for all the
favors I'll be needing, right?
