[PL] 2004 VOTE DISCUSSION: FILE UTILITIES

No one is eliminating choices. There are plenty of file
managers around to offer choice. Pricelessware is supposed
to be "the best of the best" in freeware. It's kinda hard
to have 3 or 4 "best of the best." Keep the top 2...fine
with me. It seems the voters have spoken, however.

I'm inclined to agree with you.
TrackerV3 is interesting I only discovered it as a result of the
vote. Maybe next year after it becomes more well known. For now:
To the victor go the spoils!

M

Yeah, I'd agree to the top 2, but I would have problems
with just keeping the one.

I too first learned about Tracker just recently. At the
time, it didn't have an HTML viewer capability, so I didn't
download it. I don't know it that capability has been
added yet, but that would certainly make it unique.

To be clearer.
I also agree with you!
That means: I had forgotten Tiger is advocated retaning only the
number one spot.
I was thinking in terms of the top two, as you are.

Please review the capabilities of all the programs on this list before
posting an objection to the exclusion of a program. The list is
separated into subcategories to make it easier to read. Many
subcategories overlap to a greater or lesser degree.

Many of you have greater knowledge of the programs on this page than I
do. Comments are welcome.

Whilst I'd agree that 4 aren't needed, as a user of the list I much
prefer seeing more than one program listed in a category.

In this group in particular, I'm not sure about the clarity of the
"win": I'd definitely put the top two in.

Because one utilty received just 7 votes more than another, it should
be the only one on the list? Your Pricelessware would be a VERY small
list, Tiger. Surely, there is merit to having more than app in most
categories.

I agree. Different programs, even in the same category, have different
strengths. Just for example, Irfanview beat Xnview 87-25, but I use both,
and definitely prefer Xnview for some tasks. It would be very unfortunate
if visitors to the page weren't even informed about Xnview. Perhaps it
would be a good idea to have one "Winner" and several "Honorable Mentions".

As far as I can tell, 7-Zip doesn't give me drag-to-extract functionality
in the explorer, as does PowerArchiver. Not have I found whether it has,
in GUI mode, a function where it automatically creates a subfolder to
extract to, based on the archive name. Nor multi-extract a whole group,
GUI mode, again automatically creating sub-folders for each. Have I not
looked closely enough? As is, I'm feeling that knocking the list down to
one item loses areas of functionality which are highly useful.

We need him as a strong counterbalance to the situation that many of
the rest of us tend to be big packrats.

(I don't think he fully expects us to agree one item in heavily-used
category, but it's like bargaining; if we're starting too high, he'll
start low.)

When you're talking about something as essential and personal as a file
manager, I'd think you'd want more than one choice.

Ok, I changed my mind. Wipe 'em all out. No zips for you! ;-)

In all seriousness, I wouldn't keep more than 2 programs per
category. That's just me. Unfortunately, some categories, such as
"utilities" can be a bit broad, so keeping up to 4 for that one seems
fine to me.

I will second this.

It was always the ideal that each category would have one or two programs at
most to represent it. That said, given that we vote for programs rather than
categories, there have been a few exceptions which were the direct result of
a tie or very close vote.

Whenever possible we should strive to include only what this group has taken
the time to vote on as being the best freeware.

In the past, we have also referred to programs being selected for the
Pricelessware List, rather than winning a spot on it. The former term is
more indicative of the active and collaborative process by which programs
end up on the list. IMO, that is how it should be presented when publicizing
the list.

So will I, enthusiatically. My earlier post was in repsonse to a whole
string of posts from Tiger in which he emphatically urged leaving just
_one_ in each of several categories.

Disagree. 2xExplorer and PowerDesk are very different IMO. Most love one
and hate the other.

The ability to browse linux ext2fs and ext3fs partitions from within
windows is a rather unique attribute to the other file managers
mentioned. Keep it.

These are very valuable programs and have no equal on the PL list.
Dropping these will kill a whole category.
QuickPar (Files: Validate; Undelete) 8 (out)
FSRaid (Files: Validate; Undelete) 5 (out)

Again, dropping these is a bad idea. These programs are the defacto
standards in par2 and par validation and recovery, respectively.

JMHO, of course. Please consider keeping these.

(Dammit, I hate missing the voting... }:O| Bah!)
