[PL] 2004 VOTE DISCUSSION: TEXT

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004TEXT.htm

Please review the capabilities of all the programs on this list before
posting an objection to the exclusion of a program. The list is
separated into subcategories to make it easier to read. Many
subcategories overlap to a greater or lesser degree.

Many of you have greater knowledge of the programs on this page than I
do. Comments are welcome.

Susan, I think you may have mis-categorized PDFCreator. I believe it
belongs in the next group, in which case it would fall between CutePDF
and MakePDF in total votes.

Yes. PDFCreator converts text (or anything printable) to PDF, not the
other way around.

I don't like the idea of throwing out Edxor. It has unique features
and is very useful.

I think the reason why it got less votes is because it is just a
little more difficult to handle.

I tried it and forgot about it some time ago, it didn't seem good
enough to waste time on. Then I read a message about how to handle it,
there are keyboard shortcuts you need to know to change fonts etc, and
I discovered that it is a very good editor once you learn to use it.

Isn't there place for 4 editors instead of 3?
11 votes is a lot compared to many other programs.

At this point, I'm wondering why you still consider it pricelessware.

In addition to what Roger was saying, I think that EDXOR should be
pricelessware because:

Many people have more than one text editor to be used for different
reasons. EDXOR is small and stable and opens large text files faster than
any of the other three. That alone should make it pricelessware.

What makes EDXOR unique and different from any of the other three are the
many functions for text and file processing particularly for those
interested in using encryption on their computer or learning about how
encryption works. None of the other programs can handle text like EDXOR
when using encryption programs like Scramdisk or E4M. Scramdicer is a
program used to enhance security for the password protected encrypted
containers produced by E4M or Scramdisk. EDXOR is bundled into the Toolkit
for Scramdicer and can also stand alone. These programs are available at:
http://www.oddworldz.com/scramdicer/

It was noted in some of the discussion threads in other newsgroups that
many of the Trojans today are of the key-stroke recorder and spyware
variety. To safely handle passwords for your encrypted personal info adds
another layer to the security of your computer and EDXOR is most useful for
helping to do that.

At that point, I didn't. But you snipped the rest of the story, the
reasons why I changed my mind.

By the way, I don't think Notetab should be in the notepad replacement
category at all, it is not a simple and fast text editor.

I would never even consider using Notetab as a replacement for
notepad. But I can use any of the other three.

Notetab is a macro language system plus an editor, which makes Notetab
into something different from a simple and fast editor.

My suggestion is to keep Metapad, Edxor and Editpad in the "Notepad"
category, and put Notetab in another group, maybe in the PIM category,
the word processor category, or in the same category as Keynote and
Treepad.
Well, I don't know where to put it actually, but it is not a notepad
replacement editor as I see it.

The weird thing is that the author advertises it as a notepad replacement.
Go figure.

I don't know where to put it either, but I'd rather it stay where it is
than go under PIMs.

Edxor has become my default text editor, the main features I like is
that it can handle large text files, and so far does not exhibit the
glitches I noticed in several of the current pricelessware entries.

I know, and I think that is weird too, but what the author says is one
thing, what we think is another.

I don't care where it is placed, but how it is labeled. It is now
labeled as a notepad replacement editor, just like Metapad, Edxor and
Editpad. I think that is wrong.

It could be labeled as a text editor, but not a notepad replacement.
It should not compete with any of the other 3 editors in the notepad
replacement category.

I have the impression that most NoteTab Lite users in fact use it as their
notepad replacement. I'm one who does separate my viewers/quick editors
from my full editing programs, and chose my notepad replacement by its speed
and lightness; but this is not necessarily a division made by the majority.

. Notepad replacements
. Text processors (eg NoteTab Lite)
. Text editors w syntax highlighting

Metapad, Editpad, plus NoteTab, they belong on the same page.... Furthering:
I sure would have preferred that those text editors, who offer the feature
of syntax highlighting, did not get stranded off on another page. Some of
the big software directory sites also strand them, which is too bad. Since
regular users then miss out on some good text editors. They're not just for
programmers.

Seconded. Notetab is a text editor I use for certain special uses, if it
behaved a little better, it would be my default editor.

I wouldn't call NoteTab a text processor. That implies it's one of those
processing tools like TextPipe whose main purpose is to do conversions.
NoteTab *is* an editor. It's just a full-featured editor with some add-
ons.

Agreed.

CryptEdit is my default editor. It rocks in a general editor capacity.

EditPad Lite or Classic makes for an extremely powerful, yet sprite
NotePad replacement.

I have NoteTab installed, but it's been so long since I've used it
that I _actually_ forgot which program you guys were talking about.
(too many editors).

Sorry, I shouldn't have butt in, but I found it sorta funny -- you don't
see too many lead-ins to a pricelessware candidate testamonial that
start like that. }:O)

Agree. It goes way beyond a Notepad replacement. Perhaps a new
category, such as "Advanced Notepad Replacement" or lump it into another
category, like Editors - Programming?

We have an *abundance* of editors of one kind and another - way more
than 3 . . .
11 votes is a lot compared to many other programs.

True - but *not* a lot in comparison to the votes for many other editors
.. . . sorry.
