[PL] 2004 VOTE DISCUSSION: ORGANIZERS

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004ORGANIZERS.htm

Please review the capabilities of all the programs on this list before
posting an objection to the exclusion of a program. The list is
separated into subcategories to make it easier to read. Many
subcategories overlap to a greater or lesser degree.

Many of you have greater knowledge of the programs on this page than I
do. Comments are welcome.

SiSoftware Sandra (Cataloger: System) 1 (?)

About: Sisoftware Sandra Standard Edition (Liteware)

Sandra stands for:
*S*ystem *AN*alyser, *D*iagnostic and *R*eporting *A*ssistant.

what follows:
1) Susan have announced a new PL vote for this program only.
2) Some info about the program and the competition follows below.

#1) NEW VOTE - (please vote):

With this post I do not intend to offer a review of Sisoftware Sandra
Standard Edition, or the "competition" currently on the PL - just a
reminder and awareness raiser since the program was unintentionally
left out of the final vote and as a result a new ballot for this
application only have been announced by Susan. See the following post
by Susan for details and how to vote:

will forgive us if you vote for it here in this thread)

# 2) SOME INFO

Short description for Sisoftware Sandra Standard Edition (liteware)
can be found on the PL nomination page:
<http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004nORGANIZERS.htm#ZZ250>

In my own words: Sisoftware Sandra Standard is a great program by the
UK based Sisoft company - which has been around for years now (both
the program and the company). Sandra offers wealths of system
information, which includes several test/benchmarking options for your
Windows system. IMHO it truly deserves a place on the Pricelessware
list. So - please try it if you haven't already - and vote for it if
you like it!

The Standard Edition is free for personal/educational use (Liteware -
no nag screens, no time limit etc.) A feature list for the Standard
Edition, as well as for the more advanced payware versions (Advanced,
Professional, Engineer and Enterprise versions) can be seen here
<http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=&location=pinformation&langx=en&a=>

Even if more advanced versions can be purchased, this in no way make
the Standard Edition inferior as a freeware alternative. Just have
look at the long feature list for the Standard Edition on the above
page, which include "58 total Information, Benchmarking, Listing &
Testing/Diagnostic Modules".

For more info browse <http://www.sisoftware.net/>,
with Q&A/FAQs and more....

I'm sure some a.c.f. readers are familiar with Sandra and can add to
the above (praise or criticism).

A quick IMHO note about the "competition" currently on the
Pricelessware list after the vote:
Aida32 (Cataloger: System) 46 (won)

<http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004ORGANIZERS.htm#A118>
it's been a while since I used it, but - yes - another great program
in it self, but Sandra is more complete I think. What I like about
Aida32 is it also comes in a 16-bit edition that can be run from plain
vanilla DOS - which can be helpful if you are unable to run Windows
with windows based diagnostic due to some hardware related
malfunction. In short, while Sandra and Aida32 overlap each other,
they are also slighty different - for different uses, needs and
situations. I use both when I need them. Sandra and Aida32 when
Windows is up an running, and Aida16 if Windows fails to load and I
suspect some hardware issue may be involved.
Belarc Advisor (Cataloger: System) 27 (won)

<http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004ORGANIZERS.htm#B105>
is another program that currently made it to the PL, but me thinks -
while useful - this can not be compared to either Sandra or Aida32.
This since Belarc Advisor is basically a system reporter/profiler, it
only reports what it finds of various hardware, OS and software
components and writes this report to a html page for your viewing.
Thus no benchmarking or test features AFAIK.

Ps: Anyway, IMHO Sandra, Aida32 and Belarc all belongs on the System
Utilities page, not under Organizers (I think I understand the
reasoning for placing them there, still - I just do not find this
(dis-)placement very intuitive :)

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

Some reminders, yes, but if you are constantly reminded, you must
constantly try the same modules over and over again. AFAIK only the 5
*Testing* modules and 6 (all network related) of the 30 *Information*
modules shows this behavior, but not any of 10 benchmark, 10 listing
and modules. Once you know them - that is all testing modules and 6
all-network-related information modules - they are easily skipped when
accessing the various modules via the Modules menu. Somewhat annoying
yes if you forget and "constantly" try to run the nonfunctional
modules, other than that I think it offers plenty for the regular home
users - and as such should be considered a worthy candidate for the
Pricelessware list. Particularly since there is almost no competition
in this category, only one alternative - Aida32.

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

Hello,
I always considered the free version crippleware. One is constantly
reminded of features absent from the free version but present in the
paid one.

it is, in some way. On the other hand it's very simple to divide
good from evil modules. And once these modules are removed, no
nag screen will appear again (until next setup).

I placed a screen shot on my pages with the free modules only to
give the opportunity to remove demo modules easily

Thanks! I use Sandra relatively infrequently, and I can never recall
which modules are really available and which will nag me. Once I have
the app open, I end up clicking a few, getting annoyed, and removing
one or two. Never again, thanks to you. :)

True. I usually don't even notice other people's typos. And as to my own,
it's same as with many: the typos are invisible until having posted. (Must
be the news server inserts them in.)

I am completely clueless. "ACK" ? No matter how I rearrange it, can't get
close to a guess.

I'm sure he can speak for him self, but...

I assume it is "Geek" (not Greek), that he meant the same as your
e-mail client says to the SMTP server, and the other way around, when
a transfer is complete and message received, ACKnowledged.

To add to the confusion: Keep in mind that some of us may misuse
various abbreviations and short-hand notations like the above simply
because English is not our mother-tongue. Makes it easy to confuse
such things....I guess those of us to whom English is indeed a
forening language should try hard to avoid abbreviations and short
hand notation if we are not absolutely certain about its meaning and
proper use. On the other hand, it is exactly in such cases we make
mistakes like that; we think it is clear, our use correct and
understandable, when it is not. You copy? :)

Oh well, maybe the only thing I will achieve with the above is to
demonstrate my truly limited command of the English language. At least
I hope I got the spelling right :)

All the best,

It's what Garfield does when he has a hairball.

Aha. Now, that's the one I recognized!

Your command of English is superior to that of many, or perhaps most,
native speakers in the U.S.*

(*Yet I do often truly enjoy some of the "alternative grammars" that
are in wide use here.)
