Thanks for clarifying Susan.

Yes, but only if the list of criteria is reasonably exhaustive and the
zip program scores better on all compared to the unzip alternative.
Ease of use is only one criteria. Others could be: Does the unzip
program cover more formats than the all purpose zip program it is
being compared to? Likewise - does it cover some formats not found in
the all purpose alternative? And is the unzip program smaller in
download and/or install size than the zip program it is being compared
to?

Just a comment: The post vote discussion period before the final, final,
final :) selection gives us a chance to weigh these considerations.

@corp.supernews.com:

In another thread, people were discussing how icon (resource) tools were a
questionable fit for PROGRAMMING, and I agree. I'd say the same thing
about System Tweakers. IMO the average person would look for them under
SYSTEM UTILITIES

(I also posted to PROGRAMMING. It seems people are discussing category
changes under the individual threads!)

While reviewing the programs nominated for 2004 this morning, I was
shocked to discover there is no category: GENEALOGY. Perhaps there
is a good reason for this, or perhaps no one has ever nominated a
software program to aid genealogical research. Suspecting the latter
to be true, I would like to submit a late nomination for my favorite
program, one that I have used daily for 2 years with no problems
whatsoever, and a program whose capabilities continue to exceed my
requirements even as my genealogical research becomes more advanced:

Personal Ancestral File 5.2 (Freeware) OS: Windows (all)
Multi-Language
Personal Ancestral File 5.2 is a new Windows®-based version of one of
the most widely used genealogical management programs for home
computers. The new software program can be downloaded free from the
Internet. PAF 5.2 does not provide genealogical data. Instead, it
helps users organize their family history records. It can produce,
either on screen or on paper, family histories, pedigree charts,
family group records, and other reports to help users in their search
for missing ancestors.

The Cumulative PL can be helpful for that sort of question. Personal
Ancestral File was PW in 2001 and 2002:

Hey Bjorn, are you around? If I understood right, Susan has called for
an ordering of the System Utilities page. If you have any time available,
maybe you have some helpful thoughts?

Sorry Karen and Susan, for no follow-up from me. I have not been able
to keep up with this group (or Usenet/the Internet in general). Will
try to catch up later, although I am afraid not in time for the vote
or post-vote discussion period.

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen
