Permenant Connection to Network Printer

On a netowrk of 4 pcs, 1 is the server with an attached shared printer. All
pcs can print to this printer apart from 1 XP pc. All pcs are set up the
same. I notice that in the 'Printers and Faxes' list on all pcs, the printer
is listed as 'Auto hp on Server' but in the 1 PC doesn't work on, it is
listed as 'hp on server'
The second thing I have noticed is that if I add the printer by start, run,
\\server\ then browse to the shared printer to connect , I am asked to log
into the server on the 1 pc with the problem but on all the other pcs it just
opens up a window - no login required.
The final thing is that after logging in to the server and connecting to
(installing) the shared printer, everything works fine on the 1 pc, however,
if I restart the pc I cannot connect to the printer again. So I have to log
back on to the server and re-create the connection to the printer.
Any ideas what I need to do to make a permenant connection to network printer?
Many thanks

the "Auto" printers are created by the explorer process when it searches for
shared files and printers on workgroup joined machines. Since the AUTO
printer get created there is some authentication issue on the one PC which
has to log on. If you can determine the security issue you will probably
get the Auto printer from explorer.
Be sure to save the password when making the connection.

Cheers for the reply. The username on the server is administrator and there
is no password. I normally use the run command (\\server) and it's at that
point I'm asked for a username and password with no option to save the
password. I'm going to try mapping a network drive to the server so that on
startup the pc with the security problem re-connects or re-logs in to the
server and that way the connection to the printer will not require
authentication. None of the other pcs require authentication when using the
run command and \\server so I think something is wrong with the security
settings on the 1 pc. I'll let you know how my work-around goes but if you
have any comments I'd be keen to resolve the problem 'properly'. thanks
