Network Printer Icon

This PC has four printers available to it, with an icon for each displayed in
'Printers and Faxes'. All are 100% functional, and all display the XP default
'normal' printer icon. However two printers are actually independent network
printer devices (ie they are not shared via another PC on the LAN). Printer 1
(Brother HL-5170DN) has an integral server and was installed using XP 'Add
Printer Wizard'. Printer 2 (an HP 7762) uses an external HP JetDirect en3700
server, and was installed using HP's own 'Install Network Printer Wizard'.
IMO both printers should display the XP 'network printer' icon (with the
little pipe below) in 'Printers and Faxes'. I realise that this is cosmetic
only, but it is really bugging me that the wrong icon is shown! I know the
correct icon image set is present on the PC at
C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB900725\SP2QFE\shell32.dll, but so far have been unable
to figure out how to select one of these printers and force XP to change to
the correct image set for it. I suspect a Registry tweak is necessary to
point the OS or printer driver software to the correct file. Please advise.

Alternately, please state which 'Add Printer' procedure should be followed
to guarantee that the correct 'network printer' icon IS displayed, in which
case I can simply remove each printer in turn and re-install it!

Hi Wendy
Sorry no luck to date! It's just a bit of fine-tuning really, but I really
would like to get the correct icon displayed eventually. I suspect it's not
quite as easy as you would think. I'm off on vacation now for a time, so no
further posts from here for a bit.
Regards
Norrie
