I cannot view .pdf files in my browser window. When I try
to open a .pdf attachment I get a blank window with a
small square icon in the upper left corner. the rest of
the page is blank. I checked the settings in Adobe Acrobat
to make sure they were correct, and I confirmed that I
have Acrobat selected under file types for .pdf files.
What else can I do to get .pdf files to open in a browser
window?

It sounds like the Acrobat is corrupted.Try to uninstall it, reboot and reinstall it. Boot again

I have seen Iceman post this solution on ie5.5 forum

1. Exit from IE
2. Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader
3. Choose Edit > Preferences
4. Select Internet in the list on the left
5. Select Display PDF in Browser, and click OK
6. Restart IE
