Patch Package problems on Word 2002

I now cannot open Word 2002. (part of Works 2002 suite). I think this
problem may have coincided with downloading of MS Windows updates (inc
Service Pack 2).
When I try to open a word doc I get the windows installer dialogie and then
the following message.

"The patch Package could not be opened. Verify that the patch exists and
that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that it
is a valid Windows Installer patch package".

I have searched the keyword "patch package" and came up with a lot of
different problmes and solutions. Microsoft offered a download to clean the
regisrty aand allow a clean installation of word. I ran this but I can
neither delete not re-install Word as the same message comes up each time I
try to.

I have now installed a version of Word 97 which runs OK. I also have other
Office 97 products on my pc.

Any suggestions?

The problem may be related to your installing a beta version of
Service Pack 2.

I suggest you do a repair installation of XP. That will get rid of
SP-2 but unfortunately, a repair install removes all service packs and
critical updates. After repairing your XP installation, try
re-installing Works Suite (Word 2002).

After repairing your system install SP-1 again and all critical
updates. Be sure to have your firewall up and AV software active
before getting on the net.
