Windows Installer

Hi,

I have an issue that the Windows Installer Utility keeps appearing when I
open Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Microsoft Outlook.
I have followed the various instructions on how to correct this.
Unfortunately nothing is working.

My system is Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Verion 2002 Service Pack 3.
This is my home computer.

I have used the clean up utility to remove Microsoft Office Standard Edition
2003. So I now tried to re install, it will not install.
A window comes up with the following:

Windows Installer:

This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists
and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that
this is a valid windows installer patch package.

Thank you in advance for any assistance that you may be able to help me with.
Operating System: WindowsXP

Try going to run, type:msiexec /unregister Return to run, type:msiexec
/regserver
Return to run, type:services.msc In msc, scroll to windows installer, double
click
on it,in the new properties window, set to "auto run" from manual, start
installer,
exit msc. Also, installer is at v3.1 or the newer v4.5 To verify
installer,open
cmd,type:msiexec /?

Hi Carole,
Answer to your problem is in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274473

If that does not help, I would suggest download process monitor tool from
sysinternals.com, run it and reproduce the problem. As soon as the issue
reoccurs ie.e you see the windows installer screen, stop procexx monitor
logging and review the log for any failures associated with office
application. That will provide you indication why windows installer is coming
up.

Andrew thank you for theresponse to my problem, I did as you suggested and
unfortunately this did not help. I verified that I do have the latest
installer v4.5.
I was wondering should I remove the installer and then reinstall or am I
opening a bigger problem to be solved by doing this?

Guurprett thank you for your help I went to the url that you posted and did
what was described there...unfortunately it did not work. I also downloaded
sysinternals.com and ran it. To be honest I haven't got the slightest idea
what I am looking at or what it means.
I am opened to more suggestions. Other than removing the windows installer
or reinstalling Windows XP (if either would even help) what else would you
suggest? If this is what I need to do how would I go about doing this. I do
have all the cd's that came with my computer, with the exception of not
having SP3.

Thank you

Carole

This issue only occurs when I try to open Microsoft Office Standard Edition
2003 for Students and Teachers, wether it be Word, Powerpoint, Excel and or
Microsoft Outlook. So I used the Windows Install Utility Clean up tool to
remove Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003 for Students and Teacher. I am
going to attempt to re download the software next.

Andrew and Gurpreet,

Once I used the Windows Install Utility Clean up tool to remove Microsoft
Office Standard Edition 2003 for Students and Teacher.
I re downloaded the software and problem is resolved.

Again I would like to thank you both for your assistance. :)

Regards,

Carole :)
