Password protected Discussion

I am designing a website. I just decided to add a discussion/forum. I want
to require anyone who wants to post a discussion/question or comment to have
a password and login name (as I had to in order to create this discussion).
I followed the direction on microsoft.com to set up the password and login
pages, however I do not know how to automate this process (as this discussion
did)? I want the user to be able to pick a username and password, go to
their email and click on the link to confirm, then be able to enter the
discussion forum.

Please help and thank you very much for your time. Please note I have no
programming experience and have taught myself everything I know to this
point. In other words, please provide clear instructions. Thanks again!

Suggest you search Google for a User Registration Managed Forum application that is supported by your host

For your info, if you use a newsreader such as Outlook Express, there's no
need to create a user account for these newsgroups (they are not discussion
forums), Microsoft provides the web-interface; but the newsreader solution
is better.

On to answering the question: there are many ready-built discussion forum
applications - these would be the best way because the FP discussion doesn't
allow for logins and user management easily.

You would need to choose the appropriate application that would be supported
byyour host - they may even suggest a couple that they might offer as part
of their hosting packages. www.php-bb.com and www.yabb-forum.com are two I
know of. (PHP/MySQL and CGI/Perl respesctively) and www.webwizguide.com has
a forum available using Access/ASP.
