passport sign-in information not being retained

I have MSN.com set as my home page, and have clicked the "remember email
address and password" button on the sign-in page. When I first turn on the
computer and open IE 6, I am taken directly to "My MSN" page (like I want).
However, after surfing several sites (or closing IE and reopening a new
window), I am taken directly to the sign-in page, where I must re-enter all
of the sign-in information (Hotmail address and password) again.

Often (but not always), "My MSN" page will display an old newspage
(Hurricane Katrina aftermath, Hurricane Ophelia is spinning off the coast of
North Carolina, plus already played college football games), but displays the
current date at the top of the page (currently Oct. 14). If I click the
"refresh" button, the current MSN page will reload.

Any thoughts?

Check to make sure your computer is set to accept cookies, if not then your
info will have to be re-entered every time, to do this go to tools and
internet options then go to privacy tab, then make sure it is not set to
"block all cookies", i suggest medium or if u only visit highly trusted
websites such as msn or microsoft.com then low would work. try that if it
don't work post again and we can try something else.

Hey NOPG,

I appreciate the quick response. Advanced privacy settings were set as
follows:

Accept First Party Cookies
Accept Third Party Cookies
Override automatic cookie handling box was also checked.

The strange thing is the fact that sometimes IE "remembers" that I have the
cookie to log into MSN.com, and other times it forgets or loses the cookie
and I have to reenter the info...

Any other thoughts?

another thing you could try is haveing IE remember ur password and user
names, to do this go into tools - intenet options - content - personal info -
auto complete(click the button) - then besure user names and passwords on
forms is checked and under that prompt me to save passwords, then go back to
msn and enter ur username and password and it will ask u if u wana save
it(might wana restart IE to be sure the changes were made) however it will
ask u this any time u enter a username and password good thing is u don't
have to try to remember ur passwords if u have a lot lol. another thing under
the cookies go in the advance and uncheck the override automatic cookie
handeling as allowing third party cookies can be very dangerous in opening ur
computer up to hackers and virus's and try setting ur cookies to medium or
low which ever u choose. if it still dosen't work post again and we will keep
tryin to solve it.

I'll give it a try and see what happens. For the past two days, it has been
logging in fine on it's own; perhaps it has sorted itself out :)

Of course, now that I've said this, it'll probably screw up later on today.
Will keep you posted.

Thanks again!

Hey Steve,

Still no luck. I keep looking for a pattern, but there doesn't seem to be
one- sometimes I can surf all day and keep returning to MSN.com and it takes
me to my homepage. Then out of the blue I will return to MSN.com and will
have to sign in. Weird...

That could be a symptom of incorrect cache-checking or old HTTP version.

Make sure that HTTP 1.1 is being used (Options, Advanced tab)
and set cache-checking to Every visit... (Alt-T,O,Alt-S,E)

Good luck

"HTTP 1.1" (current) or "HTTP 1.1 through proxy connection"- or does it matter?

Thanks for chiming in, Robert,

Looks like one possible explanation is that you may be accidentally
reusing a window which did the sign-in and leaving the site.

Try keeping one window which did the sign-in minimized?
Sign-on with the same Passport in a messenger program?

Good luck
