.NET Passport not retained

S

Smirnoff

XP Pro, SP3, IE8, Avast, Windows firewall, Malwarebytes,
SuperAntispyware, SpywareBlaster.

In an effort to find out why Windows Live Mail was not saving my
password, I thought I'd check out my user account.

I'm a named user/administrator. Went to Control Panel>User Accounts and
clicked on my name. I was surprised to see that at the bottom of the
changing account options was "Set up my account to use a .NET Passport".

I KNOW I have already set up a .NET Passport using my primary e-mail
address. which is also a registered Windows Live ID.

Went through the motions of setting it up again and in my user account,
the option then said "Change my .NET Passport".

Thought that had fixed it but after re-boot, WLM asked for my password
and the option in my user account had changed back to "Set up my account
to use a .NET Passport".

So it seems that nothing is being retained.

I had uninstalled CCleaner prior to this and all I have is
SpywareBlaster set to protect against ActiveX and cookies.

What the hell is going on.

I'd be surprised if installing IE8 had anything to do with this, but can you
confirm with /absolute/, no-doubt-about-it certainty that this was not the
case prior to installing IE8?

Did you fully disable Avast, all S*UPERAntiSpyware "system protections," and
disable all SpywareBlaster Protections prior to installing IE8?
I had uninstalled CCleaner prior to this...

Did you ever use the "Registry cleaner" function of CCleaner? If so, did
you save backups of the changes being made?
...and all I have is
SpywareBlaster set to protect against ActiveX and cookies.

And if you disable those two Protections...? Can you confirm that you all
SpywareBlaster Protections are not enabled?

Disabled everything according to instructions before installing IE8.
Including AV and firewall.
Had Spybot S&D at the time but "undid" immunisation. Disabled
SpywareBlaster protection.

Generally speaking I like IE8 and had no trouble installing it. May not
even be IE8 related but thought I'd check to see if anybody was
experiencing same.

I never have and never will use a registry cleaner

Will disable all protection in SpywareBlaster, try again and report
back.

Same problem (made sure all protection was disabled in SpywareBlaster)
but .NET Passport has disappeared from my user account.

Have run quick scans with MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware (no reported
problems). Will now run full scans in safe mode.

After full scan in safe mode Malwarebytes reports no problems found.

Running out of ideas now.

Uninstall reinstall IE8 and WLM?

Can't see .NET Passport in Services although there is a .NET Runtime
Optimisation Service (manual)entry. Do I need to "Run" something to add
..NET Passport?

Or is it just a registry repair/change needed?

Unfortunately that never worked, Kelly. Thanks anyway.

Set up my .NET Passport address and linked my 3 Live IDs on the website.

On reboot I went back into my user account and was presented with "Set
up my account to use a .NET Passport" again. On launching WLM I was
asked for my password.

I then went to Documents and settings/username/Desktop and looked at the
registry file properties It said that "This file has come from another
computer and may be blocked". I unblocked it and went through the same
procedure - unfortunately with the same result.

I notice in Task Manager that there are two processes listed:

WLIDSVCM.EXE
WLIDSVC.EXE

WLID would suggest that they have something to do with Live IDs. Do not
see them listed in Computer>Manage>Services and Applications >Services.
Unless they have something to do with Windows Live Sign In Assistant,
which is "Started" (Automatic).

Am wondering if the two of them conflict? Grasping at straws now!
