IE explorer and Net Passport problem

I can't say this for sure, but I'm almost positive that after upgrading to
SP2, I now have problems using IE and net. passport to sign into MyMSN.

I enter the address which is a @msn.com address, then the password, check
the box "Sign me in automatically." I connect to my "MY MSN"Homepage but
the login times out, after a period of time for some reason, and it will not
connect me automatically. I have to re-enter the e-mail address and
password again. This has become really annoying. Can anyone tell me what's
happening and how to correct this.

I've deleted all cookies and temp files, added msn, passport and microsoft
to my trusted sites ... I'm at a loss. I have gone to the MSKB and looked
for this problem and found nothing posted there. I have also checked on
numerous TechForums, and while I did find others with the same problem, no
solutions were posted.

Thanks
Dave

IE Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Sites> type in

msn.com

and Allow All Cookies for each, in turn.

Temporarily disable your firewall, any "system" tools (NSW, NIS, anything by
Norton or McAfee) and third-party pop-up/ad blockers to see if they're
interfering.

IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>HTTP 1.1>toggle on/off; "Use HTTP 1.1
through proxy connections" must *not* be checked.

IE Tools>Internet Options>Security>[zone in OE runs; should be Restricted
Sites]>Custom Level>User Authentication>Logon>toggle between the setting
choices here ['Prompt for Username and Password' and 'Automatic...current
Username...' works for me.]

Resetting either or both of the above Tabs to the defaults might help, too.

If you're running a version of MSN Messenger earlier than v6.2.0137, try
upgrading to this latest version.

If you have turned off cookies, SP2 should in theory report an error
immediately saying that you need to turn on the cookies. So it is not
a cookie problem. Also SP2's internal firewall features would have
prompted you if it is trying to block you from going out to the
internet?

I encountered that problem before. I rememember that first thing I
tried is to clear the temp directory. However I still encountered the
problem on and off. Since it was an intermittent problem, it led me to
think that more likely it was caused by network congestion, or due to
a bug in auto-signing by IE. In any case, having the "Sign me in
automatically" is not workable or secure if you are sharing your PCs.
BTW, I solved my problem by having a BHO application to auto-fill in
my password instead. (Shameless self promotion ... i am using our own
ipGuardian :) ). Maybe you should investigate using a password
manager as well.

Good Luck.

The funny thing about SP2 is that I turned off the Firewall, yet when I go
to log into MY MSN I'm still getting warnings from the Firewall. I opened
the Security center and see that the Firewall is showing on, yet when I
click settings for the Firewall it shows I've turned it off. I'm about
ready to un-install SP2 (despite the warning that some of my
software/drivers will not function) and rely on Norton Internet Security to
handle everything, as System Restore will not allow me to back-up to the day
before installing SP2.

Thanks for your input, I might have to rely on your suggestion about the
password manager.
