Outlook Express / SP2

I thought I saw this question answered in here before but damned if I can
find it now. I downloaded and installed SP2 and everything seems to be
working great however I have noticed that even though I have OE set to check
for new e-mail every 5 minutes, it never does. When I open OE it then checks
for new e-mail. Not once since installing SP2 have I been notified of new
e-mail. I have norton 2005 firewall installed and have allowed total access
to the internet for OE, the windows firewall is turned off, and I'm rather
new to the DSL world but have been told that with my DSL / router whatever
it's called, that it also has a built in firewall. I can send e-mail with no
problems and when I open OE it checks and recieves e-mail with no problems.
1, How do I get OE to check for and notify me (taskbar) of new e-mail?
2, Since I have a firewall with my DSL and Norton, will I be any more
protected if the windows firewall was turned on as well.?

Outlook Express will only check for email if its running.
If you close it, it will not check for email because it is not
running. That's the way it has always been.

To avoid conflicts and error messages, it is recommended
that you only use one firewall. Attempting to use two firewalls
will not accomplish additional protection.

The minimum time to set it for is 10 minutes or the servers cannot reset
properly. Mail checking and notification is for POP mail, not web mail like
Hotmail. The Windows firewall turns off by itself if you have another
software firewall active.

If it were a server issue, that would be the case regardless of
what E-mail client you use. What you say isn't true, as I can
attest by my own experience: I use Outlook 2003, have it set to
check for mail every three minutes, and it works fine.

No it doesn't - you have to manually turn it off.

It depends on which firewall it is. With most recent third-party
firewalls, the Windows firewall will be turned off automatically.
With older ones this will not happen.
