Outlook Express problem

I have a new OE problem that just surfaced a few days ago. When send an
e-mail, I get the usual "sending" message box, with an error message that
there are problems with sending the e-mail. Then the e-mail transmits
normally, but remains in my "Outbox" - I have to delete it to prevent it
being sent again whenever I send the next one. This prevents me from having
it automatically saved in my "Sent" file. I have checked McAfee and other
installation points to no avail. Anyone have any ideas what to do next? I
use Bellsouth, but can't find any reason that it is their problem, as my BS
web-mail works just fine.

1. Move any messages that you want to keep out of Sent Items and Deleted
Items folders and into other folders you've created for archiving (saving)
such messages.

2. Write down the location of your identity's store
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain).

3. Close OE.

4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to your store folder, find & delete the
files Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, and Deleted Items.dbx.

To avoid such problems in the future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

thanks for the info. I was able to solve the problem by running the e-mail
compacting procedure. Apparently when the sent file is "full", messages
remain in the outbox folder instead of being moved to sent.

Yes, your email files are too large This is more of a problem than it
appears, as you will be heading towards file corruption.

OE uses a separate .dbx file for each folder. Delete what messages you
can, and then make some more folders (such as "sent-2006"), and move
messages from the main folders to these. Then, re-compact them. Pay
some attention to the sizes of the files before and after compacting. Some
files, like Deleted Items, don't always compact well, and this file should
be moved to another folder outside of where OE thinks it is. When you
restart, OE will re-create it at the basic size.
