Having difficulty sending e-mails

I have been having trouble sending some e-mails. For example, when I tried
to send a single message today, when I hit 'SEND', in the send window that
pops up, I only get one line with the green check mark instead of the usual
two. The message remains in the outbox, not the sent box. Any ideas?

Has it ever dawned on you to let the readers of your post know what
ISP (Internet Service Provider) you are using to send emails? Is it
Outlook Express, AOL, Yahoo, Netscape, NetZero, etc.??? What green
check mark?
