Outlook 2003, Where does it store the message ID numbers for POP3?

I just recovered my computer and re-installed Outlook 2003. I put my old
..pst file back and got all my messages. But then Outlook 2003 tries to
download all 8000 messages from my POP3 server (Yahoo), instead of
remembering it has already done so in the existing .PST. I only want it to
download the new messages, not all the messages left on the server. What
file or setting am I missing to keep Outlook 2003 from downloading all these
duplicate messages?

If I am not mistaken this is a setting in Yahoo. Maybe someone can correct me if my answer is wrong

No, it's Outlook's job to keep track of what has been downloaded from a POP
server when you choose "Leave a copy of messages on server" in the Advanced
settings. The problem is that my freshly installed Outlook 2003 doesn't know
that those 8000 messages have already been downloaded to the .PST file. The
tracking mechanism must be somewhere else other than in the .PST file. Very
frustrating.
