not sure I know what you mean. Can you give me a little more

Try clicking start | Run then type CMD and press [enter]. At the command
prompt that appears type PING and then the name of your Exchange server.

If you don't know the name you can find it in Outlook under Tools | E-mail
Accounts | View or Change... Select the Exchange Server account and you
should find the server name on the first screen.

I tried it. not sure if I did it right. typed PING (all upper case) and
then -without a space- typed my server name. Clicked enter and it said
that it's not recommended as an internal or external command, operable
program or batch file.

do you think it's safe to turn off the Microsoft Firewall if I already
have the Check Point one running, or do they work in conjunction
somehow?

You shouldn't run more than a single firewall on one PC.

Ah. That's a problem. You should check with your IT guys because it doesn't
sound like your VPN connection is working properly.

You might ask them what the IP address of your Exchange server is and try
pinging by that. That would tell you if the problem is the connection
itself or just your name resolution.

The nature of this problem appears to be such that you're going to need some
rather skilled local assistance though.

And yes, I would turn off the Microsoft Firewall if you have the Checkpoint
one running already. Having two of them doesn't help and can cause
problems.
