[OT] Is there such a thing as a free domain name?

Is it possible to get a genuinely free domain name?

I have seen some people say that there is no such thing as a free
domain name as the user will have to use some tied-in webspace
which
is chargeable.

I would like to be able to have my OWN DOMAIN NAME for some
webspace
so it didn't all sound too rinky-dink or amateurish and also
satisfied my vanity! :) Even more ideally, it would be free
and I
would be able to point the domain name to a different webspace if
the
webspace host starts charging.

Any recommendations?

In addition, I would next like to get some free webspace so I can
point the free domain name to it. And suggestions?

Thank you.
Zak

PS: Would I also need to have some sort of DNS service in order
to
enable the domain name to be accessed by other surfers?

Short answer: Not really. Some companies may offer domains as
loss-leaders, or throw it in free with hosting purchase though.

In .COM/.NET space, the registrar has to pay the gTLD registry ~$6 and
change for the domain. They won't do this free unless they are getting
something out of the deal, either money directly or advertising dollars.

The best you'll probably do is find a host that will sell you a domain
and throw in a bit of hosting cheaply enough that the domain is
effectively free.

You probably won't find a completely free service , but .co.uk domains are
now only a couple of quid a year and you usually get some free webspace from
your ISP that you can use to host the site.

Not now, but I got my domain initally from Namezero for...free. Well, I
picked the domain, it was in their name for 1 year, then after that they
gave me the option to get it in my name for 1 year for $5 US. Since
then, I have allowed them to be my registrar for about $15 a year. Not
the cheapest, but overall, not horrible. I am going to switch
registrars to the chap who is hosting my page, since he will be able to
handle all the chores, it will make my life easier.

advanced communications, but also medical aid (Telemedicine) and a
better education."

How do they get advanced comms, telemedicine and education out of
giving me a free domain name? The TK servers may not even be on
Tokelau.

Any infos?

Its very confusing. Some will only allow you domains with funny endings (eg
popnic) so cant really be called your own domain name, some will give you
everything but not allow you to take the name anywhere else unless you pay a
transfer fee - overall its best just to spend the few quid per annum for
your own name so you can do what you wish with it, point it anywhere or
transfer it when you like. If your isp space isnt enough, you can get very
reasonable hosting packages from 10 or 15 pounds a year too (depending on
space required and usage of course).

I think it's a dutch company that actually handles the tk domains. I
think they make the money out of selling the .tk domains to people who
actually want to own them. When you get a free domain from them you're
only 'borrowing' it.

Might be wrong it's a long time since I read up on it.

I saw a tip about 50webs.com and have been quite pleased with it so far.
Your domain name will be http://yourname.50webs.com - 60megs storage,
e-mail, no advertising (ala Geocities), control panel with file manager,
etc. Not a bad set up at all. Plus you're allowed more than 1 (which
I've also taken advantage of).

Did you acquire a free domain name through one of the services linked in the
50webs.com site? After reading through the steps I wasn't quite clear if a
domain name registered was required or if one just provided a name.
Also, 'uploading any file is limited to 200K - in the forum 300k is
mentioned as a new feature-' So no sharing of zipped ware that is larger
than 2 or 300K is my interpretation.
I cannot figure out how it is that it is totally free but there it is.
This would be a good resource for a volunteer service group on a budget or
anyone watching their pennies for that matter.

You aren't provided with a true domain name, tho if you have one you can
point yours to their dns servers. They let you choose a 'domain name'
that has their 50webs in the url. For instance, I chose
http://tech-head.50webs.com as one of mine. I have a small, home-grown
tech-support sideline & it won't matter to my friends or customers if I
have 50webs in my url. Otherwise, they essentially offer all of the
tools that the 'pay' website hosts offer. I'm not affected by the 200K
upload file limit, since I don't store or offer downloads.
