Open TIF from password protected FTP

I have a web based catalogue listing documents. The documents are located on
a FTP-server which requires user authentication. The documents are accesed by
use of a URL build up like this:
ftp://username:password@servername/folder/folder/filename

This works perfect with documents like DOC, TXT, PDF and others.

The problem is when trying to access .TIF files. I have tried several
programs, but all seems to fail on a variants of the following message:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\SDMVYPAF\Filename[3].TIF: Can't read file header!
Unknown fileformat."

It seems like the TEMP-file from IE is removed before the viewer/program
get's to open it.

I have tried to assosiate TIF with the following programs without luck:
- IrfanView
- Microsoft Office Picture Viewer
- Paint
- Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

The only program that has helped partway to the solution is QuickTime. With
this program I am able to open the TIF file, but I am not able to print it
out. A printout will result in a blank page. PrintPreview does also show me a
blank page.

I am running Windows XP Professional with SP2 and all available patches
installed, Office 2003 Professional and Internet Explorer version
6.0.2900.2180.dpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks!

FileMon would let you check that assumption if you let it monitor
how the download actually works.

Also if you have checked
Do not save encrypted pages to disk
(Options, Advanced tab, Security section)

I would uncheck that option.

Good luck

I have checked my problem with File Monitor, and it confirms my assumption:
The TEMP-file is deleted by IEXPLORE.EXE before any of the programs are able
to open the file.

As i mentioned earlier, I have found that QuickTime is able to open the TIF
files when used as a browser plug-in. This is unfortunately just a partway
solution since it won't let me print the TIF-file. A print and a print
preview in IE shows only the IE header and footer. The TIF-file itself is not
included in the print.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks,
Simon

I found a solution to my TIF problem, and since I involved you in my problem,
I want to share the solution with you :

I downloaded and installed Brava!Reader. This is a nice program supporting
TIF inside Internet Explorer. With this program I am able to open a TIF
inside IE before the temp-file is deleted. I am also able to do printouts of
the TIF file.
