Can anyone tell me why, when trying to register a brand
new copy of xp online, I get the message, " Online
registration failed, please mail the yellow card that
came with your copy of windows xp"

Just call MS customer service and they can register it
for you over the phone

This sort of failure usually happens if you let the activation wizard
try to dial in for itself. Be on the net in advance, then run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows

BTW only the Activation aspect is essential - registration is entirely
voluntary - the only benefit is having the Product ID number (in Control
Panel- System) registered for possible 2 free support incidents
