No system or MSN sounds

I have a similar problem on two separate PCs. Have tried everything I can
find to try.
In Sound & Audio properties, some boxes like midi playback don't show a
device, if you select one it disappears when the dialogue is reopened. I have
also noticed that the volume control in Creative Media Player is frozen and
the Play Button in Sound & Audio properties is greyed out.

I've found a System Restore to a date when the sounds did work fixes the
problem, at least for me.

Sound in Winamp, Windows Media Player and most internet sites work fine. But
none of the system sounds, any sounds in msn [or anything off the YouTube
website.] I've looked at this website -
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm for the fix, but all my
registry values seem to be fine.

If you can't use system restore or it doesn't fix the problem, check for
missing audio codecs (Control Panel, Sounds & Audio, Hardware, Audio Codecs,
Properties, Properties) if the list is empty or only a couple of codecs are
there you need to reinstall them - see my post in 'No sounds from web sites
or system sounds' 3/8/2006 for how to do this.
