No Sound Events

Can anyone help me with some info? Windows XP Pro, SP2. Problem is that no
Windows sound events or default sounds work, but all other sounds work fine,
soundcard works, games play sounds, etc, etc..

I was having trouble with another program that plays default sounds for
certain events via the Windows default sound device and it stopped playing
these sounds. I checked the settings for the default sound device and made
sure the sound card was set OK, then I noticed that when you go into the
Sounds setting, where the "Play" button is down the bottom to play the
selected event sound the button is greyed out and there are no startup,
shutdown or other default sounds..

I've tried searching the internet and Microsoft KB but haven't found
anything that looks like it deals with this problem on XP (found one KB
article about 2000 similar problem..)

Unfortunately none of the suggestions on that page resolved the problem...

Any further suggestions? Please?? I'd rather avoid a fresh install if I
can.........

This problem has been here for a little while now and not sure when it
started so system restore isn't really an option...

Tried the suggestions on Kelly's website Where did my sounds go?

Still no sounds, but the soundcard is working fine as I can play games,
music, and other sounds.....

Any more suggestions?? Please???
