no response from remote desktop

I connect to work via Microsoft VPN and use remote desktop. Remote desktop
occassionaly stops responding for various lengths of time. Disconnecting and
reconnecting the VPN does not help. Also I have tried talking to my internet
provider who finds no problems. I have also tried the Cisco VPN and the same
problem occurs.

I would set up a continuous ping in order to monitor the
network connectivity.

When RD stops, use Windows Explorer and see if you can still see the
network shares through the VPN. If so, then the VPN is still up and
your problem is with your RDC settings.

But before that, are you setting your experience and speed options
correctly on the RD client? Are you using RD client 5.5?
