no ntvdm (16-bit subsystem) after install of ms05-036

A week ago I downloaded & installed the recent patches. After that, any
access to twain.16, twain.32, command.com, scanner utility soft (scanjet 4c)
or usb-camera soft only resulted in a damn slow os. 99% of cpu time is used
up by various ntvdm processes, one per program. Already tried to repair
command.com (OK), registry (OK), *.nt (OK), scanned for virus, spyware,
adware (OK). Uninstalling patches & a reinstall of any update including SP2 &
all patches didn't help either. Now, I'm even unable to install or deinstall
any graphics-related soft. I really don't want to do a reinstall from scratch
because there is lots of soft installed & it'll need days (at least) to
reinstall everything properly. Sys is XPPRO SP2.
ANY GOOD SUGGESTION APPRECIATED!

Helge.

Check your Windows\System32 folder and see if you still have config.nt and
autoexec.nt files. Then check them according to
