[newbie] SVCD audio problem

Greg

Hi,
I'm capturing analog tapes via a Canopus ADVC-100 using
MM2. The capture seems fine, and the AVI has video and
audio.

Using MM2, I add some titles and transitions and also
import one of the sample sound files at the start of the
movie. Save this to an AVI and still have all video and
audio.

I use TMPGenc to convert this to an Mpeg2 for SVCD.
Checking the mpg file on the PC, I still have video and
audio.

When I burn the mpg to SVCD I get video and only the
audio for the sample music when played on my DVD player!
The audio for the remainder of the video just
disappears! I've used Nero and Cyberlink Power Producer
to burn the SVCD with the same result.

I've tried just using the initial AVI capture with no
editing, and the sound disappears as soon as I burn the
SVCD....For testing the process I have been using a
CD/RW - is this OK or should I use CDR?

What am I doing wrong??

TIA
Greg

Hi there,

First let me say I have never made a SVCD disk...and this is probably not
the best place to ask your question anyway, but

If the file created with TMPGenc has all the audio and the file that is
transferred to CD does not, then the file you transferred cannot be the
right one. Cancel that, I have just re-read the last part of your
message....

Just out of curiosity here, can you play a music CD on this drive?

Have you tried copying back to your hard drive and into an otherwise empty
directory one of these files that suddenly does not work right on CD, just
to see if it plays right?? If it does then there is something wrong with
your CD drive...perhaps the cable that connects the audio line to the
motherboard is not plugged into the right socket on your sound card.... I
doubt if that is the cause...just musing Its very odd. Another thought...do
you have play DIGITAL music selected in your systems audio setup, that can
cause a load of problems if you don't have it configured properly.

John,

Thanks for the reply. Everything plays fine on the PC - I
even checked the SVCD disk itself, and it plays fine
through PowerDVD!

When I put it into the DVD player, I get the lack of
audio. I have an SVCD & CVD that a friend has made, and
they play fine on the DVD player, so I'm fairly sure the
problem is somewhere in my process....I just have to work
out what it is.

The joys of being a noob... :)

Just a followup on my own problem.

It appears to be some stereo/track issue, as I've made
sure the audio was at 44.1K stereo etc for SVCD
compliance and still had missing audio.

I've converted to different AVI formats, re-extracted
audio etc 'til I am ready to 'frisbee' the CD out the
door....

And tonight I made progress, and a VCD (not SVCD - yet)
that works. I ended up re-extracting the audio to a MONO
MP2 format, then used TMPGenc to make an SVCD MPG.

When I tried to burn it to SVCD via Nero, Nero
said 'nope, invalid format, go far away...' or words to
that effect.

So I said 'bother'. Or words to that effect.

And I tried again and said 'make it a VCD instead'. And
Nero said 'It's not the right format, but I shall convert
it for you'. And it did. And with low expectations, I put
it in the DVD player. And there was much rejoicing! For I
had AUDIO!

All in all, waaaaayy too much mucking around, but at
least I know now that I can make it work if i extract the
audio and merge the stereo tracks together. If I then
save it in stereo format, I *think* I'm OK.

I still don't know *why* it's like this, but I can at
least fix it.

And I hope this tale saves someone else some angst.

Cheers,
Greg
