This has been my first choice for FTP programs for a long
time, too.

The license I have with my copy (v1.00 (Build 010)) says-
"FTPx Corp. (hereinafter FTPx) grants you a limited
non-exclusive license to use the SOFTWARE free of charge if
you are a student, faculty member or staff member of an
educational institution or your use of the SOFTWARE is
exclusively at home for non-commercial purposes."

Is there a new license with the current download?

I just DL:

FTP Explorer 662KB v 1.00.10

ftp://ftp.ftpx.com/pub/ftpx/ftpx.zip

from the readme:

<q>
FTP Explorer is FREE for home or educational use.

What's New
----------

* Changes in Version 1.00.010 (6/3/97)
</q>

and the SETUP.EXE file says it is v 1.00.005

Guess I'll see if the other DL links produce a different file.

Hi Guys,
Can anyone please advise on which free (obviously) FTP program to use
please. If anyone does reply to this (thank you) I would be most grateful if
you could please point me in the right direction.

Many thanks.

Dave.

Use WS FTP Lite. I've tried them all. This is the best. Believe
me. It's not the flashiest, but it works when the others don't.

If the software you're using meets the needs you currently
have then there's no reason to change. Really, why fix it if
it ain't broke.

At some point, you might need more than what you get from
using Internet Explorer; that's when you will be more
interested in what the other available programs offer.

That's what I thought. I took it that the specialty ftp programs have
features above and beyond the basics that I already have in IE. That
being the case, I spose there'll be a time when I have a use/need for
such a program. 'Til then, I'll stick with what works. I just was
wondering if there was some major, obvious shortcoming in IE that these
other programs offered that I was clueless about.

While the readme.txt (dated 1997) inside the archive reads:

Me thinks it was easier to recommend a nice ftp client in the "good
old days", when WS_FTP (LE) was about the only ftp client for Windows
anyone knew, and the LE version was commonly available "free for
non-commercial users". Not like current WS_FTP LE; "free for
educational users only" and requires registration to get.

Btw: the older (but not as old as ftpx!)
free for non-commercial use WS_FTP LE,
can be found here
<http://home.att.net/~short.stop/ws_ftp32.zip>
(still very good IMHO)

Hi Bjorn,

Thanks for the WS_FTP LE info.

re FTP Explorer - there are three links leading to two download
locations on the site:

ftp://ftp.ftpx.com/pub/ftpx/ftpx.zip

http://www.ftpx.com/downloads/ftpx.zip

with identical files - with the 1997 date.

Lots of other places to DL that file - also other versions - tried one
larger one file size and one smaller one - both were older yet than the
version at ftpx.com

all very odd - is there a *real* v 1.00.10 somewhere???

File Size: 1.21MB (I don't have the setup anymore, lost that ages ago)
EULA: doesn't appear to be one (there's a Readme, but nothing about EULA or
distribution in it)**
Date: 6/3/97

** As noted above, the following is the only "licence" sort of thing in the
readme.txt file that I can see;

"THIS SOFTWARE AND THE ACCOMPANYING FILES ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND WITHOUT

Maybe the v 1.00.10 shown on the site is a typo?

I think I'll quit trying to figure it out and go back to what I was
doing before this came up. :)

Ha! I don't blame you!

Anyway, the version I have (as noted in my previous post)
has this in it's license-
(It's under Help > License.)
"6. DISTRIBUTION

The SOFTWARE may be freely distributed provided that it is
not modified and the original archive remains intact with
all accompanying files, and provided that no fee is charged

distribution media)."

Does anyone know what the last "free for non-commercial use" version of
FTP Explorer is? Can it be distributed? I suspect someone here will
offer to host this app if a file is available.

This is what I have ftpx.zip 662kb Version 1.00 (Build 010) Copyright
1995-97 by FTPx Corp.
<q>FTPx Corp. (hereinafter FTPx) grants you a limited non-exclusive

use the SOFTWARE for up to thirty (30) days for the purpose of evaluating
whether to purchase a commercial license.

If you are using the SOFTWARE free of charge under the terms of this
Agreement, you are not entitled to any support whatsoever.</q>

<q>The SOFTWARE may be freely distributed provided that it is not

I snagged it here...
http://www.tiem.utk.edu/~peek/software/windows/Ftpx/

I can't see where it is capable of setting permissions (chmod) for
folders and files and that's a necessity for me. I don't think it
provides for viewing the local drive and remote folders at the same time.
Maybe I've missed that setting though. Fast and easy to use though.

FTP Explorer was free for non-commercial use until recently (not sure
when the change was made). The site currently offers:

FTP Explorer 662KB v 1.00.10

ftp://ftp.ftpx.com/pub/ftpx/ftpx.zip

which has a *free* license - for a chosen few. . .
similar to the *free* license for WS_FTP LE. . . :(

I have a similar question. Does anyone know the last "free for non-business
use" version of WS-FTP LE?

(I am using version v5.08 which is free for non-business use. But the
version listed on their website is much more restrictive).

Looks like the latest version *is* 1.00.010 (6/3/97) (not v 1.00.10).

That's easy to find - I myself now have 5 copies of that version, a
couple of other versions and a long list of DL locations. . . ;)

This seems to be

I've read through the thread and looked at a couple of the programs'
sites and I still don't have the answer to a question that's been on my
mind for some time...

While it's rare, and not critical, I do on occasion access an ftp
server. For me, it's a simple click on a link or typing an address into
IE, and there I am. I can browse the server, upload and/or download (as
permissions allow) -- no muss, no fuss, no extra software. All the ftp
sites I access are automatically put into my My Network Places folder
(W2Ksp4). I can add them to my Favorites folder as well.

So here's the dumb question: why would I need another program to do what
I'm already doing with IE? And no, I'm not trying to be argumentative..
I really wanna know.

Uploading or downloading to a password protected server for your
website. You or they don't want just anyone to get in there. :)

I think you're right about the views. In my perambulations around the
net I read this:

http://cws.internet.com/reviews/ftp-fexplore3.html#whatsnew

<q>
Still, several areas that need improvement keep FTP Explorer from
taking the crown; most notably, FTP Explorer only displays the remote
site's files as opposed to WS-FTP and CuteFTP's side-by-side display of
both the local site and the remote site.

Hi Rob,

I think that *might* be the last free for non-business use version - v
5.08 was the version that was being offered as recently as February 7, 2003.

Been using WS-FTP for years (free for home use.) Never found any reason to
need anything else.

I use, and love Ftp Explorer. Like it's drag and drop capabilities. My
version is 1.00 Build 010. I installed it September 13, 2003, but have no
idea when it was d/loaded. A very nice app, but apparently few people know
about it.

Don't know (but have seen the other posts here about it).

Fwiw I think there are better or at least equally good alternatives to
be found. The last free for non-commercial use WS_FTP LE version is
one such candidate IMHO.

And there are other options worth exploring. For example as an
alternative to a stand-alone FTP clients: File Managers with FTP
support (ftp clients integrated, some also w/server). Using a file
manager as ftp client my self, shareware though (TCMD). Can't say how
good any of the following are as FTP clients, but anyway - here they
are:

DualXplorer <http://delphi.icm.edu.pl/authors/a0004178.htm>
Fileant <http://fileant.com/>
JExplorer <http://home.megapass.co.kr/~woosjung/#Downloads>
Pablo Commander <http://www.pablovandermeer.nl/> (recently updated)
TriDComm <http://tridcomm.com/>.

Did I forget any?

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen
