Check out FSecure... they still maintain a DOS product that is free.

1. Look at security on www.Pricelessware.Org for F-Prot (DOS) and avast!,
AVG, or AntiVir. avast! is quick/easy to update; AVG scans faster but has
been having update problems (overloaded server?). AntiVir provides context
menu file and directory checking, but not for multi-file selects. Also
consider BitDefender as a secondary on-demand antivirus scanner. It is
quick/easy to update, moderately quick to scan, handles zips better than
most, and tends to complement avast!.

2. For supplemental F-Prot programs, check the Google ACF Newsgroup (Group)
Archive for F-Prot discussions, especially links to Art..

3. Pricelessware and the Google ACF Archive will answer most questions.

<http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/dos/>
"[...]FREE for use by home users on personal workstations[...]"

Notice the warning though:
from: <http://www.f-prot.com/support/dos/dos_index.html>:
<quote>
Please note that there is a problem with running a DOS antivirus
scanner on Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / 2003 / XP systems. It is not
guaranteed that all files will be scanned. The reason for this
has mainly to do with long filenames and non-ASCII characters in
file names. DOS only "understands" 8 character long filenames.
Therefore use F-Prot Antivirus for Windows to scan Windows NT 4.0
/ 2000 / 2003 / XP systems.
While I am on the sunbect, does anyone know of any NTFS AV progs.

Any *Windows* AV client will, as the AV client does not provide
support for the file system - the OS does, so as long as your OS
supports the NTFS file system - and the AV client runs under your OS -
the AV-client will check NTFS volumes just as it checks FAT volumes.

If your asking for a scanner that can be invoked from the commandline
(CMD window/dos box) several of *Windows* scanners offers this as an
option in addition to their GUI interface, including some of the free
ones....like fx - AntiVir Personal Edition
<http://www.free-av.com/main.htm>. So check if any of the other free
alternatives offer command line options - see the various free
av-clients individual homepage for info, follow links from first link
below.

Free av clients preferred by members of this group

For opinions on any of the free clients, try searching past messages
in this group here
<http://www.google.com/groups?&as_ugroup=alt.comp.freeware>
select search only in alt.comp.freeware - and then input the name of
the client in the search filed (or try a more general search)

apps, and also offers links to good info/portals etc)
