Networking XPpro to NT 4.0 sp6a

I have a simple network of three computers. The Server is
NT Server 4.0 sp6a(BACKROOM1, Domain TW22), the second
computer is RG1, and the third computer WAS a Win98
computer(BACKROOM2). I purchased a new computer(XPpro)to
replace the Win98 machine. I successfully ran the network
wizard on the XPpro computer but cannot connect to the NT
machine. I cannot ping the NT machine, yet the nic shows
that it is enabled and on line. I have specified the DNS
address as indicated by ipconfig from the NT computer. I
have enabled NetBios over TCP/IP. I have not used the
WINS on the XP computer although it is enabled on the NT
computer. What do I have to do to make this work?

On the XP machine:

1. Make sure the firewall is NOT enabled on the Local Area Connection.

2. On the WINS tab in TCP/IP advanced properties, enter the IP address of
the NT 4.0 Server.

3. Make sure you have configured a compatible IP address.

What do you mean by #3, "a compatible IP address?" The NT
machine has an IP of 10.10.10.10 and the XP machine has an
IP of 192.168.0.1.

I think you found the problem. The XP machine uses a process called anding
to determine whether an IP address is on the same subnet. 10.10.10.10 is
not on the same subnet as 192.168.0.1, so the XP machine will send any
packets targeting the NT Server to its default gateway if it has one.

Run ipconfig on the NT Server and write down the subnet mask. Configure the
XP machine with an IP address of 10.10.10.11 (unless some other machine on
the network is already using it) and enter a subnet mask identical to the
one you wrote down.
