networking xp and 98

I am attempting to add a Windows 98 (not SE) machine to an existing network
of two xp machines with a DLink DWL-520 wireless card thru a Belkin G
router. I should mention that I've had a 98 machine (not sure if it was SE)
on this same network in the past using the same DLink card, but a B router,
and it worked fine. The Mobo went bad on that machine, so I built this new
one using a new OEM version of 98. (I 'bought' 98 SE off eBay, but I don'
think I got it. How do I tell for sure if it's SE?)

I've checked that the drivers are current, that the card is configured
properly, machine ID's are correct, but the 98 machine just won't recognize
the others. It shows MSHOME as the domain, and itself in the network window,
but not the others, and the others can't see it, either.

I did hook a CAT 5 cable to a wired NIC card on this machine and was able to
surf the web, but I removed the wired card and tried the wireless, but no
go. I need it to be wireless.

Any idea what I should check?

Rip, Assuming that you have no connectivity (physical or logical) issues, and no
security issues, your problem is quite likely the well known conflict between
Windows 9x (95, 98, ME) and Windows NT (NT, 2000, XP, 2003).

Rip,

I would think that your System Properties applet will display the system
version, though I don't know what 98 pre-SE shows; I doubt it says "98 pre-SE".

But that's irrelevant. Windows 95, 98, and ME have the same problem. SE or no.
As far as I know. Where do you see a reference to 98 SE, where that becomes an
issue?

SE has Internet Connection Sharing, pre SE doesn't. Also, the DLink wireless
card says it's compatible with 98SE, Me, 2000, NT & XP, so I wonder if that
means it's NOT compatible w/98 pre-SE. I'm pretty certain, however, that
the last time I had this card working, it was on a pre-SE machine.

Why is ICS a consideration, if you have a router?

I installed XP over 98 and the card works fine, so it must not be compatible
with pre- SE.
