Network not seeing all drives Windows XP Professional

M

Mr TJA

I cannot connect to computer "Dads" from computer "Tab". I cannot connect to
"Ralph" from "Dads".
There are other computers also having trouble connecting.
When I click on Microsoft Windows Network on "Tab" it lists out all of the
computers that really do exist in the Workgroup ISMGroup. those are
Antec
Dads
Databox
Laptop
Ralph
Screamer
Tab

When I click on Dads under Microsoft Windows Network while on Tab computer I
get error message. "Dads is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator to find out if you have
access permissions. The network path was not found"

While on Dads computer under same location, the workgroug ISMGroup only
lists out Dads C drive and shared folders etc.

Other problems while on Dads is that only 4 of the 6 already setup mapped
network drives exist, and of those 4 I can only see Tab and Databox, and
cannot see Ralph or Laptop when I click on each under the mapped network
drive section.
We cannot recall changing any settings. I am trying to use "browstat status"
to debug.

This is probably a firewall issue - try disabling whatever firewall software
you use (presuming you're behind a decent perimeter firewall appliance) and
try again. Make sure all comptuers are in the same workgroup, that you can
ping each by IP address, and then try by name.

This might be a connection limit issue.

XP Home only allows 5 simultaneous connections.
XP Pro only allows 10 simultaneous connections.
Keep in mind that one machine can use up multiple connections.
Do you still have this problem when the other machines are turned off?

John

So, post the browstat logs here, maybe we can help you sort them. What SP level
is on each computer?

Mr TJA

I will get this information for you Chuck and John. Rebooting pc with norton
turned off (using msconfig to change start up) did nothing.
When I test if I can "remap" the Dad drive from the Tab machine, it only
lists the Dad drive under the ISMworkgroup, not the C drive or other shared
folders.

M

Mr TJA

from Tab browstat the first time showed something like browsing not active on
this machine. Now when I rerun the screen only echoes back that it is working
on results for IMSgroup, but then it never finishes and the screen goes away.

From Dads
Status for domain IMSGroup on transport \Device\NetBt_tcpip_{etc...etc}
it says Browsing is active on Domain.
Master browser name is DAD
Master browser is running build 2600.

sorry to repost. Also is there a way to capture a log of the browstat
without having to retype the info into a text editor, so I can just paste it,

Chuck, I have checked the router.Under the ARP/RARP Table
all 6 computers are showing up with their ip addresses.
But I cannot ping the Dads computer. This problem started when a newLinksys
router was added to replace the old one on the network.

M

Mr TJA

Lastly, I followed to liberally the idea of removing some Nvdia software from
computer and believe I removed 2 programs of Nvidia which is bad cause now I
cant install any new drivers at all. This computer has a built in network
plug into themother board (NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Control) it says
under description on a ipconfig/all). Anyhow I did something so bad that when
I try to roll back the driver or update the driver I get error code 19 in the
Hardware Device Manager. something about registry values being removed or
damaged. SO I had to install a realtec NicCard to get the pc back to the
network/internet. I've lost the abliity to use the fancy scroll properties of
the mouse wheel, The bad network adapter is still showing up in the Device
mgr with exclamation mark. I do not think this Display or network adapter was
one I cand download a driver for anyway if it is hardwired to the
motherboard. No I'm in deep bull manure, and all system restore points the
last week do nothing to help.

I do not know the names of the NVIDIA programs I removed just know that the
old driver was dated something like 2002. Its Windows XP professional. I had
to get Windows reactivated after I did this, and that was a 2 hour process.
