Can't see workgroup

G

Guest

I have two WinXP boxes configured on a network with a linksys router. Both
can see the internet. Both are configured to use a workgroup, TORGROT.
First computer Helga can see Ralph, but Ralph can't see Helga. Helga can use
shared files and printers, but Ralph can't see anything on Helga. I have
File and printer sharing turned on on both computers and both have shared
directories. Now to make it even more complicated, I added a new Windows
Vista laptop named Sylvia. I configured it to use a workgroup, TORGROT
again, and it can see Ralph but hot Helga. Helga can see Ralph and Sylvia.
Sylvia can only see Ralph and Ralph can only see Sylvia. If I try to add a
printer shared from Ralph to Sylvia, which I can browse to, I get an Access
Denied on Sylvia. Printing from Ralph works and Printing from Helga to Ralph
works. I am very confused. Can anyone help me sort this out?

This problem is most frequently caused by a misconfigured or overlooked personal
firewall, or other security component. There are several other possibilities
too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open
mind.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

You could look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Well I finally found the problem on Helga. I had to restart the Messenger
service. Now I can see all three computers Ralph, Helga and Sylvia. Thank
you for the information. I can't access Ralph from Sylvia though, I get the
Access denied if I try to open a file on Ralph or add a printer. Sylvia is
the Vista Home Premium laptop. Helga can access files on Ralph and uses the
printers on Ralph. I enabled the guest account and created the same user ids
on Ralph with no change. Live OneCare is installed on all computers and the
firewall is set to allow file and printer sharing. I tried adding a printer
locally and then changing the port to TCP/IP but Slyvia still can't connect
to Ralph. It has to be a problem on Ralph, but I just don't know why it
blocks the Vista computer and not the XP computer Helga. Help Please?

You found one problem, now you have to look for the second. Start with my
tutorial on solving network problems.

What edition of XP and Vista? If Professional / Business, then CPSServ run on
each computer should give us an idea what's up.

If XP Home / Vista Personal, CPSServ won't help as much but start with it and
we'll go from there.

A new wrinkle is that a new folder created on Ralph and Shared is now

OK, with Vista Home Premium (!!) not having the Remote Registry service, and the
unknown problem(s) that may or may not be present in either computer, CPSServ
isn't going to tell us a lot.

I do see that you're running the browser on both Ralph and Silvia. That will
cause conflicts when you get the other problems resolved.

And why no diagnostics from Helga? Read my article on troubleshooting, in
particular item 4.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html

Barring useful clues from CPSServ, we'll have to run CDiag on all 3 computers.
To do that, we have to start with Browstat and IPConfig, as I mentioned
previously. From all 3 computers.

Well, so far, I don't see a problem. Unless maybe when you interpreted the
CDiag results, you made a mistake. CDiag is most useful when I get to interpret
the output, but if you want to do that, I won't stop you.

How about you interpret browstat and ipconfig too. Read my tutorials carefully.

I'm going to try and help you, but you will have to trust me sometime.

Chuck,

Thank you for your assistance. Last night I went through and carefully
checked all the account names and passwords. I created new accounts and
passwords on all three computers. I can now see all three computers and
share files and printers between all of them. I turned off simple file
sharing on the XP boxes and configured the shares for everyone access.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad it worked out for you. Simple File Sharing isn't
always that.
