I deleted msn messenger via "add remove programs" but the icon keeps showing
up in my tray.
I rechecked the "add remove program box and it is not listed there.
What do I have to do to remove all traces of msn messenger. Reminds me a
bit of trying to get rid of aol traces-took forever.
thanks,
tim

You'll just need to disable Windows Messenger. To disable Windows
Messenger, open it up
(click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options,
Preferences tab
and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger
when Windows
starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the
background' or
'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background' (depending on version).
This won't remove
Windows Messenger, so features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and
Application Sharing
will continue to work, but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton
Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger
and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the
Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open
Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and
click OK.

Are you seeing msn messenger or windows messenger in the task tray? Windows
messenger is in xp by default.

Odd, but MSN Messenger is a standalone product. Once un-
installed, it's gone. Are you talking about WINDOWS
Messenger? If so, then Windows Messenger is part of the
OS (Windows XP) and can't be un-installed. It can however
be disabled.

So go check first, is it Windows Messenger or MSN
Messenger?

Hello
Are you sure it is MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger they 2 separate
programs, you have removed MSN and now will have to disable Windows
Messenger it is built into the Windows OS there are several ways to disable
it, the easiest is to go to Outlook Express>Tools>Options>General>remove the
check mark.
or

Windows Messenger can be uninstalled.
Close down Messenger (right click the messenger icon in the notification
area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then
click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

I am just curious. I disabled Windows Messenger with the command in
start\run:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

So it disabled it, it said so. Or it uninstalled it, I am nor sure
which. But what I'd like to know is just what missing the functions
"whiteboard" "application sharing" do? What am I missing or won't be
able to do exactly?

If you are talking about Windows Messenger, the following might help. Copy
these 3 lines into notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client]
"PreventRun"=dword:00000001

Save it as as *.reg file (make sure "all files" is listed below in the "save
as" box or it'll end up with a "txt.reg" extension, which won't work. It
should change icon to one of a REG file, not text file. Rightclick it and
select "Merge", and click OK to confirm. The new key will be added to your
registry. You should see an immediate difference (I did when I used it), but
reboot if you want.

Regards
Tim

BTW: I'm thinking maybe if you change Messenger to MSN Messenger
in this REG key it might work for MSN, too.

You also need to stop Outlook Express from loading it: in OE Tools -
Options uncheck 'logon automatically to windows messenger' and in its
View - Layout uncheck 'Contacts'
