"MSDV.sys" fix for Canon MV20 Scrambled Capture with SP2

G

Geo

I've been reading with interest about these "fixes" for the problem
that a lot of us seem to be having with Canon's MV20 and SP2.
I've been having exactly the same problem - when I use Movie Maker I
can only capture one pixelated, scrambled frame.
So far I've tried Kristen Miller's advice to replace the new MSDV.sys
file with the old one (see other threads in this forum). People seem to
have made it work but I am having trouble seeing some of the files
required for this solution.
Windows\lastgood\system32\drivers doesn't show up. (I can see the
dllcache if I change my Windows Explorer options.)
What's more, the old version "reverts" to the new MSDV.sys
(5.3.2600.2180) a couple of seconds after being changed in the
Windows\system32\drivers file even if I delete the new version first. I
suspect it's to do with this "last good" folder that I can't see?
Does the same problem arise with a program like Adobe Premier because I
read one guy saying it's okay - maybe it's worth trying that. I can't
belive that my Canon MV20 is the only incompatible video camera in the
world!
I feel like I've nearly got this sorted but it's driving me crazy. I'd
be grateful for any advice.
Yours sincerely GEO

It really depends on what the problem is.
If it is the firewire port, then no matter which app you use non will work.
If you get a trial app and see if that works it will tell you if it is the
firewire port or not, though premiere at £000's against the free MM is
rather a large step, it is also much harder to use. I suggest starting with
ulead or pinnacle

Please see my post and respond to it if you have suffered problems with SP2
and firewire which weren't apparent under SP1.
Most of the problems appear to be due to firmware in the cams which desn't
strictly adhere to teh ieee1394 regs, which SP1 didn't, but as MS have taken
steps to adhere to the specs, it has left problems, which aren't really MS's
fault but the cams, they should be supplying updated firmware.
I have their attention on this at the moment, and they are looking into
trying to help people, but need info, if no-one leaves any, I can't give
them any and status quo.

See

"Camcorder not working after installing SP2" , and please give as much info
as you can, and as yours is partly working a description of how well it
worked before and after, how it worked after each tweek made etc.

Please do not respond to this thread as I don't have time to continually
search for info.

Thanks
Graham

I am trying my best here, but unless you can give the info I need to pass on
to MS, it's no use just complaining.
FYI, MS implemented the full ieee1394 standards in SP2, and it appears to be
that some camcorders are/have not implementing the standard in their
firmware which is causing the problem.

Latest fix from Microsoft

I too had the same problem of having a badly pixilated image from my Canon DV20 via IEEE1394a Firewire with Microsoft Windows XP Pro and SP2. I contacted my PC vendor who advised me to update my motherboard bios. This had no effect. :( Then he advised me to update my firewire driver from the Microsoft Knowledge base using the link below.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885222

This had no effect.

Then he had me update the driver for the Canon DV camera from the Microsoft Knowledge base using the link below.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;893008

This worked, yipee. :D Apparantly the driver from within XP does not allow the format to be changed from NTSC to PAL. Even though you select PAL in your settings it still remains in NTSC format.

This may be the fix for some of you, but not for me.
This update only works for XP SP2 with english language.

I have a norwegian version of XP an cannot use this update.
Does anyone know if there will be an update for other languages ?

Thanks to you all out there. You have just saved my sanity. I could not understand how I could capture video on a 40Gig hard drive with a 600 mhz processor and VGA graphics and could not capture with a brand spanking new, all singing all dancing computer.

Believe it or not I actually took the computer back and exchanged it for a new one as the guys at Pinnacle and the computer suppliers were at a complete and utter loss as to how to fix this and it has been going on for 8 weeks.

Hallejuah - I can now capture video again.
Just goes to show the power of the bulletin boards.
Thanks folks

Nils. I have the same problem as you. Did you find the fix in Norwegian? or did you fix it another way?

Nils, fikk du fiksa problemet? Jeg sliter med samme greia. Har ett MV20 kamera og XP Home edition. Banna greier.

I'm Italian, an MV20 CANON camera and your same problem.
This is the solution!!!
Here's what to do:

1. Attach your Canon MV20 to you PC.

2. Uninstall your Canon MV20 drivers as they currently exist:

a. Choose "Start" | "Control Panel" | "System" | "Hardware" Tab |"Device Manager"
b. Go to "Imaging Devices" | "Canon DV Camera" and right-click; choose "Uninstall"
c. On the "Confirm Device removal" dialog, choose "OK"
d. DISCONNECT your camera from your PC!!!

3. Now, we need to roll-back your MSDV.SYS file:
a. Reboot your PC into "Safe mode" and log in as the Administrator account. (You can choose "Safe mode" by hitting the "F8" key during your PC's boot sequence.)
b. Launch Explorer and navigate to Windows\Driver Cache\i386,
b1.Right-click on the "driver.cab" file, and choose "Explore"
b2. Find the old "MSDV.SYS" file (it should have version number earlier than 5.3.2600.2180). Right-click, and choose copy.,
b3. Paste the old MSDV.SYS file into the following directories:
Windows\system32\drivers\
Windows\system32\dllcache\
Windows\LastGood\System32\Drivers, (if you don't have this directory is not a problem - ignore this single root)
b4. Navigate to Windows\Driver Cache\i386. Find the SP2.CAB and rename it.,
b5. Reboot your PC normally.
4. Once your PC is rebooted, and you've logged in, re-attach your DV camera to your PC and confirm that the device enumerates in the control panel. If you've done everything right, you should be able to check the version number on MSDV.sys via the Control Panel driver details."
5. When you attach the camera first time, you'll receive the message from operating system "MSDV.SYS" not found, Insert Windows XP 2nd edition. Don't insert cd!! Go to Windows\system32\drivers where you have previously copyed MSDV.SYS.
Now my sistem works!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Lindsay.

I tried to update my Windows Xp italian but the MS patch worjks on only with english OS. Could you copy the MSDV.SYS, zipped it and send to me to test into italian OS ?
As reported by italian user it's possible to boot in safe mode and overwite the current MSDV.SYof SP2 (until now we used the MSDV.SYS of SP1).

If you send me the MSDV.SYS update (folder WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\) I can test it into italian configuration.

I'm the Hq system engineeer of Canon Italy. You can image how it's important.

Best regards.

THANK YOU CAMPI! The procedure you explained above worked and I am now able to use the firewire to get the video.

I have one more complaint though. Have you experienced any problems with loss of frames or hacking in the preview video window? I have tried both Pinnacle Studio 9.0 and Windows Movie Maker, and it happens on both of them. That is why I think it may be a related problem. I also experience that the machine shuts down during capture. It may of course be a problem with my PC but I think it is strange as it worked fine with capture trough the USB (composite) before following your procedure. I have a Intel 4 3.0Ghz processor and 512MB RAM. Have you experienced anything like this?

Kind regards

Hello kjekken6! I'm happy the procedure worked well. As regards other problems you have with preview video and unattended pc shut down I'm sorry but I've not experienced about it. My PC works well using Windows Movie Maker, Ulead Video Studio and Nero Vision. I've an Intel 4 3.0Ghz and 1GB RAM (HP Pavilion zd8000 series).

Kind regards
Campi
