MS Word 2002 only starts in SAFE mode

I have a problem with MS Word 2002 and Outlook 2002.

Word will only open in safe mode. If I try to open in normal mode I get a
MS Word Visual C++ runtime library error and it closes. There is a debug
option which I press, however it has yet to resolve anything.

I am also experiencing problems in Outlook 2002 which may or may not be
related; when clicking on the New message button I get an message saying that
" A program is trying to access e-mail addresses stored in Outlook" it then
gives me an option to allow access or not. Whatever I do the message
reappears next time. I have an active Virus checker which has yet to find
anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Almost certainly you have a defective or incompatible add-in that Word is
attempting to load.

If you are using Word as e-mail editor, this could account for the related
problems in Outlook.
