MS AntiSpyware slows down booting winxp prof sp2 considerably

Hi,

Sometimes (often really, but not always) it takes minutes extra to boot
since I have this software installed (version 1.0.509). It seems like in the
boot process multiple instances of gcasDtServ.exe are running. Multiple
icons are visible in he right hand corner of my monitor. Sometimes I have to
kill the gcasDtServ.exe process (taking up 90% of the cpu cycles) with
taskmanager. Only than booting proceeds and in the end only one icon and
only one gcasDtserv.exe is running as a process.

I'm running winxp pro sp2 with the latest updates and patches, MacAfee
VirusScan Enterprise 7.1.0 and all drivers updated.

Ad Aware, Spybot S&D and MS Antispyware is run regularly and finds no
malware.

Thanks for any info

You seem to know your stuff and relatively well protected ;)
If the OS updates|hardware|software are all intact there is no reason to
keep runing multiple protection units on more than occasional basis.

Keep in mind that MSAS is early beta release and in it's current state
intended for testing purposes only.

If you suffer any known/unknown side-effects, your best bet is to hold off
till
next and --hopefully-- more *stable release.

Hi

Multiple instances are probably beacuse of low memory, I
have tried to run
this in a PC with 256 MB RAM and it is problem for sure.

- If possible upgrade to at least 512 MB memory.

- Remove all programs you don´t need. Check everything that
autostarts with help from msconfig.

- Clean your PC from "junk", this tool can be used,

Thanks plun,

I doubt is is low Ram, since I have 1Gig installed. It might be time to comb
out all unneeded autostarts again. I'll look into the tool you advise.

Thanks plop,

You're probably right. The reason I did install the software was that it
detected a nuisance that ad aware and spybot didn't notice and that those
packages can cleanup, but afaik don't protect real-time.
I'll seriously consider your suggestion, trading extra protection against
some strange boot delay.

Thanks for your quick and wise response
