SP2 Upgrade No Go

I tried upgrading one of my PCs to WinXP SP2 but no luck. I got a message
saying the upgrade was successful but I was not able to boot the PC after
the upgrade. I tried re-booting several times but no luck. Safe Mode was
also a no go. Fortunately I had made an image file of my hard drive
before I ran the upgrade (using Drive Image) so I was able to easily
restore everything back to pre-upgrade.

Here are the details of my system and upgrade process. The PC has an ASUS
P4C800E Deluxe motherboard with the latest BIOS. I'm running WinXP Pro
SP1 with all of the latest updates from Windows Update (except SP2). As
best I can tell, I have the latest updates for all of my applications and
the latest drivers for everything. Everything on the PC seems to be
working normally. For the SP2 upgrade I downloaded the big (270+ MB) file
from the MS Web site and ran it. It seemed to run normally and, as I
said, I got a message saying that the upgrade was successful.

After running the upgrade, when I tried to boot, the system BIOS went
through its normal POST. Then WinXP started. I got the initial WinXP
logo screen as usual but about 10 seconds later everything just stopped.
No hard drive activity. No booting. The only way out was to press the
hardware reset button on the PC.

I don't know if this means anything but I did notice that on that initial
WinXP logo screen, where it used to say "Windows XP Professional," after
the upgrade it said "Windows XP." The word "Professional" was no longer
there.

I have no clue what the problem is. Any suggestions or clues appreciated!

Some users have reported a long-duration black screen at the first boot.
I wonder if you waited long enough? The logo screen is normal, BTW.
On my two installs, there was a minor length black screen - just long
enough to raise my heart rate - maybe ten seconds.

Me thinks that at times adding shortcuts and so called helpful programs
tends to pollute WINXP and make it difficult for updates to install
properly. Other then AD-Aware or Spy-bot I don't use and extras.
On the 18th of this month I was notified thru Automatic Update that SP2 was
going to be installed, it took until today 8\24\04 for SP2 to start
installing. I did nothing to prepare for it except wait for the installation
to begin, took a while,flawless. My MB is about 3 years old, Pentium III
933MHz, 640 RAM. I think by all standards it's old. So far SP2 did no harm
and functions I might say a bit better. I think at times it appears if it's
not broken don't fix it. Not bragging just a comment of the top of my head..

Which BIOS level is that exactly?

Do you have a Prescott CPU?

I know of no mobo mfg that assigns labels like "latest" to BIOS levels. You
post nonsense.

This might fix it. Get a windows 98se boot disk with fdisk on it.
Boot fdisk

First make sure fdisk reports the partition active.

Type fdisk. Type Y and Select number 2
If not change to active.
Esc exits
Remove floppy disk. See xp finishes it update

If that does not work.
Even some people will disagree with me. This should work.

Insert windows 98se boot disk again.
Does not matter what file system you have.
At the command prompt
Type Fdisk /mbr


Remove disk. See xp finishes it update
I had boot problems because I have a dual boot system.
So it worked on both Ntfs & fat 32.
However windows xp repair console fixboot & fixmbr
did not. Actual made it worse. (Very Long story)

Some users have reported long boot times etc., i am tryiong to find message
posts that solved this problem. Word "Professional" missing from logo screen
appears normal.

If I understand your right. Microsoft has remove Professional and
Home and others from the logo screen. That's normal.

(another words, they were to busy to make other boot logos to get xp
sp2 released.)

I sure some one will come up with a way that you can put that boot
logo back on the machine.
